  • So I'm a little dissapointed.

    Yo!

This thread is kinda ranty but its been bugging me all day, and I figured I should share the wealth.

Well it started with a friend that quit FFXIV harassing me to check out this Korean game called TERA online.

At first I was all LOL KOREA, IT CANT BE THAT GOOD! and then he managed to get a korean account and we tried the game out for a little bit (its exclusive to korea atm and getting in the game was a bitch) and it just blew me away.

I mean sure its a mix between WoW and Aion in the character/armor department but it still looked impressive and they did will with getting the "high fantasy" aspect dead on with the designs.

The world looked badasss with the 1st starting town being a freaking island in the sky with the sun having like magic rings around it and like crystal trees and all that noise.

Stuff like leveling up gets you a gigantic sign with wings and all that and it just felt a million times more rewarding, compared to our tiny "rank up" animation.

Abilities like the provoke one was actually the character screaming at the enemy and actually looked like he was provoking it and it looked great and made me feel bad about my not so flashy Provoke II....

The battle system in general mobs the floor with FFXIV's in both animation and fun factor.

High tier magic were all epic and not just like a simple cast, more like the wizard/mage/whatever drawing in the air with his fingers and shit came flying at the mobs, and was a million times better than what we have at FFXIV.

And speaking of mobs... damn, giant mutant half dragon half knight with armored skeleton minions in a fucking castle of death kind of setting that people fought at LV40 all decked out in powerful looking armor and it all looked great, I mean even though I hated the "feel" of them since they didn't look as well animated as SE creations it was still a great looking fight. compared to us killing wildlife with the biggest badest mob we have being a stupid big goat that we fight at 50 with our not so impressive rags.

Quests! even simple "go kill 3 tree monsters" we got at lv4 was with a CS about how the ent sonofabitch thing is killing little creatures and how you should go kill it, and you ran there and kill it and then just run back and it also felt satisfying, and made me cringe at our kill-8-dodos quests and so-so leves.

Character emotes were just better than FFXIV, more anime-ish, yeah but more believable than the crap my hyur does when he /thumbsup.

Oh and they had real mounts, like a freaking armored horse with wings while we have... anima...

It just made me feel a little bummed out, and somewhat disappointing that this no-body game (TERA) just mobs the floor with a game we've been waiting for, for years and was supposed to be the next evolution in MMOs if even just the evolution of the already bad-ass FFXI.

I still love FFXIV and I want to keep playing if solely for the great community I got involved with, but I'm still disappointed that Square Enix hmmm fucked up?

    /rant.

    Thats pretty much it. /bow.

I tried FFXIV, a game everyone already knows is awful, and I didn't like it!

Then I tried TERA, a game the whole internet knows is great and has been anticipating for months and it was awesome!

More like how come TERA is everything FFXIV promised to be and more?
It had everything it needed, from an experienced team, a great composer, a decent story and we got this.

and 6 months in, their 1month old game has EVERYTHING SE promised that we will get (eventually), but on steroids.

      What the hell happened!

Whilst it does look nice, the over the top flashy animations will get annoying eventually.

It does make a refreshing change to see that all of the female armour doesn't mainly consist of a bra and thong.... oh wait. /sigh. In fairness to SE, that is one of the things they got right (mostly). I don't want my gear to look like it's come out of a teenage virgin's wet dream, I like the idea that it is fit for purpose. Obviously though, I'm not the target audience so..

I think that Terra and the other Korean MMORPGs that are adversising mainly their graphics, are going to be bad. When the main thing you tell your audience, and show off the most are all the boobs and ass and HD skin in your game, it means that your just covering up a sucky game. I have the same beef with Blade&Soul, hell even on that game all the female character models I have seen look horrible proportion wise.

I read through TERA's website. Firstly, the game's website is horribly written. From the gist I'm getting, it's a terrible game with a hodge-podge of nonsensical races and job classes. But I have trouble commiting to that belief since I do find the documentation so poor.

no I got his point, but again, Terra and the other games like it, fail at its core.

I have heard of Terra, and I have actually been wanting to try it. But its probably gonna end up to be like all the other korean games that are nothing but grind grind grind...

Unless someone discovers a new aspect to MMOs I feel they're pretty much on the wane anyway. The genre has been stale for a while now and nothing I'm seeing on the horizon promises to change that.

They got rid of the tank DPS, and healer, yet still have it as a game that requires Team play at certain areas.

They got rid of the "go kill X" Or "Collect X" quests, and have dynamic events.

                            What I'm trying to say:

TERA took pretty simple and stanrd things like emotes, casting spells, quest CSs and took an artistic license with them, and it came out great and it made it look as if our complains were answered by them not SE, in their game.

Level up > a display of greatness indicating that you gained a level, very rewarding.

Casting spells > big deal, with a big end result to finish off your "mage-y" dance.

Emotes > uh... more emotions in them.

The world > its pretty much like starting the game in sea(ffxi), makes you itch to see whats coming next.

Enemies > you fight tree beard and rock golems at level1 instead of dodos and rats.

Quests > dramatic CSs to let you know that your "kill 3 tree monsters" run is an important duty and helps immerse you in the game.

If you think about it, all they did was evolve the basics we see in every MMO out there and made it look great.

                            Why was I disappointed?

Because we were complaining about those things since close beta, and we complained after release, and when they did respond to us we got NES quality quests for a game that was supposed to be the evolution of FFXI that did all those things better than the new game that we waited so long for.

Re: So I'm a little dissapointed.

I've been having a lot of fun with Rift actually. The PvP is awful (but let's face it, it's not a PvP game) due to the highly customisable class system being impossible to balance for PvP, but the PvE is great. The zones are huge, there's a good variety of quests that use all of the zones they're in and dungeons that can be done at all levels for if you get bored with questing plus the ability to go grind if that's your thing. The backstory is interesting and the Rift/Invasion mechanic basically takes the best parts of FoV and Campaign and improves them.

One great thing about the Invasion mechanic is that the size and frequency of them depends solely on the zone population. So if there's just a few players on then the invasions will be small enough for one or two players to handle as long as they aren't idiots while a highly populated zone will see massive invasions which smaller skirmishes happening quite frequently.

It also encourages and rewards grouping up by giving a group XP bonus per kill. Basically the game gives you a bonus to make that group kill give the XP the same as a solo kill, so you have the choice between fast kills and fast XP or slow kills but you keep all the drops to yourself. The aforementioned Rifts and Invasions can be VERY lucrative in terms of XP gains and due to people being encouraged to group up, the community is surprisingly mature for a brand new MMO (though I do play on an RP server so that may be why).

One nice touch on the RP front is that in RP servers, you can talk to the enemy faction. I've been in some great organised PvP events and even done some very fun roleplay with people from the other faction. Because of it my server actually has a cross-faction guild of sympathisers of either side in an effort to make a third faction that not only fits in with the lore but has actually been encouraged by the GMs and Devs.

Also, armour for female characters is practicable and not really revealing unless you count the starter armour that you have scrapped after the first few quests anyway. The female armour DOES have the infamous chainmail bikini but the devs had the good sense to put some clothes on under it. While there ARE some revealing armour sets (But only if you play a female Warrior), thankfully most of them are as practicable as the male sets.

If there's any players from here on the Argent server who wants to RP then message Lilisette (no I didn't take the name from the FFXI characte, I had actually forgotten about it until someone ingame asked me if I played FFXI) ingame or on the forums.
