Re: Letter from the Producer, V (03/03/2011)

I think what would have been a better idea, would have been to take the core things that made FFXI good, and improve and add to them... instead they made something way to different, and way to much at once. The problem with that is some where along the way they forgot what they where doing.

At first I too thought that FFXIV being so different was great....till I started playing it -.-

Making it the same game wouldn't be a very Final Fantasy thing to do.

Similarities are fine and the interest on the developer's part to have more instanced content before big endgame stuff makes its way in is fine - but if this game becomes too much like FFXI, there's no point to it.

Also, I think even considering making mission/quest content soloable is weak and rather un-Final Fantasy. I'd rather not see story content become the fucking joke FFXI has become, thanks.

The point of an MMORPG is to socialize and work with other people. If you don't want to work with other people you have no business playing online games. I'm always mystified by the hypocrisy of people that act like working together is a criminal offense for missions and quests, but perfectly OK with when it comes to ramming your head against a wall every day.

Oh, I mean slavishly doing endgame content, not a wall.

I'm holding out the hope that endgame content is as whip-smart as what came out from CoP onward in FFXI - content with more progressive rewards and a small group focus rather than Kings and Dynamis. People like seeing a light at the end of a tunnel, a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and all that. People want tangible, achievable rewards without dragons that have less than a 5% drop rate on swords and shit.

Re: Letter from the Producer, V (03/03/2011)

It should've never been XIV in the first place, it was never meant to be.

FFXI-HD, FFXI-2, FFXI remake, etc. whichever name you like. It was supposed to be an updated version of XI period. Having the same races as XI and the same areas and monsters was no coincidence. Then Tanaka&Co.'s vision got in the freaking way.

That is why I'm annoyed about the whole thing. From the ground up this was never supposed to be anything but an updated version of XI. So now they have to do whatever they can to try and correct course, but we all know the damage is already done, they will need to keep painfully improving Eorzea until it dies without being able to make it it's own game while trying to bring it closer to XI.

There's just no win either way, only lesser degrees of lose.

I love how Raydeus professes to have knowledge of SE's inner workings and what things "should have been."

The more I read the producer letters the more interested I am in playing it on the PS3. The only real problem I see with that is by the time it eventually releases on the console the economy and the population in general will be much like it was at NA release with the JPs only made worse with their bullshit exp fatigue system.

It seems that the developers are trying to strike a balance between making this game unique and then adopting features from other games. Most notably, if they do instances much like in WoW, then I'm all for it. But if it's anything like in FFXI, that would make me want to kill someone. Standing in large groups, spamming away at the little arrow on the ground, isn't exactly what I would want to adopt from FFXI.

As long as they can stay away from FFXI (some features were good, but the system overall was horrible) and incorporate some of the niftier features from other MMO games, I'll be happy with what they end up with.

I have to admit, despite the fact that everything I read is negative and that almost everyone I know who has played has quit already, I still want to play. Obviously, I fall somewhere in SE's target market. :/

I think it's interesting how they are changing the game to be exactly what the majority of the players want. Has any other game / platform done this before? And these changes are DRASTIC to the initial structure of the game, not minor...

I don't think it will be a good thing for the reasons I posted before.

But it's not like they have anywhere else to go now.

If it plays similiar to FFXI, I wouldn't mind. It's still a brand new world and lore. And still has potential to be a little more user friendly than FFXI's steep progression.

FFXI is the best videogame ever and I still would be playing it if my ps2 harddrive still worked (darn radiator), and my xbox360 didn't melt, mew. FFXIV Online could very well match and surpass it eventually.

What happened to all your hype.

Anyways... Best is an opinion, not a fact.
