I'm tired of Gladiator, so I'd like to try Lancer. Is there an NPC shop that sells rank 1 gear? Is there one that sells rank 1 underwear? I can't seem to find anything, and the people crafting stuff are crafting late-game gear.

There is rank 1 gear available for every job from NPCs
use Final Fantasy XIV Database - Yellow Gremlin - ffxiv.yg.com to find the gear and its appropriate NPC. I would highly suggest getting familiar with all the features on this website if you plan on playing 14 ^^
you can also to level 1 battle leves, they seem to usually give out rank 1 gear. good luck! -

Market wards have new seller NPCs that has a bunch of stuff, also almost any weapons shop sells R1 weapons.

You can also use YG to get materials for gear. Personally its a lot cheaper to buy the materials and have a friend make it then to actually buy the gear itself.Comment

I have started over a couple times, mainly because I don't really care to grind super hard when the game isn't really giving me a carrot.
but I must say, using YG is probably THE single most helpful thing for playing this game and especially starting out. You can easily find most of the weapons/tools that you need and WHERE to buy them. I also don't think its a problem that these are somewhat difficult to locate, because it adds a little bit of investigation on the players part.
that being said, the recipes are absurd still. Maybe Its just going to be a harder crafting system than other games, but so far I don't think I would even play if I didn't have database search websites like YG to help me find out what i am supposed to do. even then I sometimes want to pull my hair out.
finding an item I can craft => going through several pages to figure out that one of the items is level 30+ to fight for/ craft.. damn!Comment
