A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
You don't need to play to have heard of how awful the release was, but to be able to form a decent idea of what has changed, and how interesting the game would be IF it had more content ( a lot more) you do need to play.
I have said to myself dozens of times "this would be so sweet if [X] were added to the game". The X usually being something you would totally expect from the FF online series. I think about how if they put a lot of work in adding things, the game would be amazing. This includes tweaking the "core" to be more conducive, and inviting to team play.
We can't tell now if the dev team will be able to do anything, but we can definitely see potential. The game sits like a super fancy, good looking shell. They just have to start adding content to their already designed system. That's how I feel, maybe thats how Luna feels too.. ? lol

I can understand to complain about things that need to be changed in the game. To complain about content or there lack of is beyond retarded. No MMO out yet has released with amazing OMG content. You cant hold that against them and you cant complain about it either. The game is way too new for that.
As for complaining about how the game was released, well yeah that would have been fine 3 months ago. The fact is the game is NOT like that now, so complaining about something that was once but is no more is also beyond ignorant. I think that would be considered an understatement.
Also if you want to go on and on about how "SE doesnt care enough to charge for the game". Well if they didn't care there would be no game. What do people think they just pulled the game out their ass? Money does not grow on tree's and video games do not create themselves. Seems to me like everyone who is bitching about the game and how it "was" or how there is a lack of "subscription payments" are only grasping at air to try and prove a point that does not even exist in the first place.

It all depends on whether or not the changes are working and bringing people back.
Because playing Paid Alfa (and currently beta) couldn't have possibly made many people happy back then, or even now.
So, is it working?

Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
Itazura has a point.
And those of us who played FFXI and put up with SE's inability to listen bullshit for upwards of 5-7 years are definitely in the right to be apprehensive about XIV turning out to be a game worth playing.
Do I play? No, can't afford to buy an ultra-computer capable of running it. And at this point, it would have been a terrible investment.
You can keep your head in the clouds if you want, but those of us on earth are capable of seeing that if Square Enix themselves do not believe this game is worth paying for, it's not a far stretch to assume that it's going to take a lot to get it to that point.
And the fact that you won't even read the responses of people who disagree with you (players or not) does not speak highly of you. In fact, it makes you look like a child with your hands over your ears screaming, "LALALA I'M NOT LISTENING!" (which is, incidentally, what SE did to us for half a decade with regards to FFXI.) It sure does make it hard to take you seriously.
Shit, even J9 can listen to what others have to say and has the ability to take their criticisms with a grain of salt - and while she generally disagrees with naysayers and irritates most of us with the overuse of "mew" and extreme optimism, she's given people the chance to at least express their opinion. Which, at the end of the day, I can respect.
It doesn't take a player of the game to see that with even SE admitting the game was not ready for release, it has a very low chance to recover. And might I just add, that I really did want them to succeed with this game and create another immersive environment for me to devote another five years of my life to. At the end of the day, though, I'm not incapable of seeing where they fucked up and expecting them to put up something worth paying for or wash my hands of anything to do with FFXIV.
Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
yeah as much as I defended this game in alpha/beta.....I had to turn away and leave the game, mainly due to school, but the games state influenced it a lot as well. I might look back into FFXIV if/when the PS3 version is released (currently marked for June)

To me everyone who plays the game currently LOVES it. I have not met one person currently playing that does not love the game and is willing to stick with it.

This is a case of glass half empty or full. Most of the people that didn't like the game had long quit. Most of the people in my LS fall into that category. We're talking about maybe 8-10 players out of a stock of 14 or so that quit.
Not everyone who is playing this game currently is happy about it or completely loves it. Some players stick it out for various reasons. Maybe because their friends play and they would not want to alienate themselves from friends. Maybe it's a wife who wants to spend time with her husband and tries to find something to do. There are some players who invested too much time in this to bail out and want to wait for the promised changes. There's a few, like myself, that had already decided to give SE a fixed amount of time, which in my case is 6 months from release, to sort out the issues and let me think about whether or not I want to continue playing after this 6 month period. But to make a blanket statement such as the one you're making is both presumptious and a bit arrogant that you seem to know the mindset of every single player around the world and can speak for them.

That doesn't answer the question, but it gives me a good idea of what you are talking about.
I rest my case.

Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
Yeah but personally people quit WAY too early. Its not like they were paying for the game, and to spend $70 on a game (for the CE edition) just to turn around and quit bec you didn't like the way it was released.... well thats just stupid and you might as well as wiped ur butt with that money. As most people know from FFXI, video games do not become amazing over night. These things take time and effort to accomplish. Sure you can argue they should have ported more of FFXI's aspects over to this game. You would just be missing the point of creating an entirely new game to begin with.
Another thing, the developers who worked on FFXIV were not the same developers for FFXI. So they could not in a sense "learn" from the previous MMO. I assure you tho, we will see some amazing changes in the game now that we have the FFXI team alongside FFXIV.
Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
What would be stupid is to remain playing a game that isn't even fun for you. That would not only make you lose money but also time, which is by far the most valuable of the two.
Now obviously a MMOG will take time to solidify after release, but judging from the reported amounts of player desertion it's safe to assume XIV was at a level way beyond the usual MMOG launch issues tolerance limit.
Also, judging by your responses there are no players coming back even if the game is still "free" to play right now, which says a lot. Obviously the players who remained through the worse of it would be very happy or at least less annoyed with the current state of things, simply because at this point they will accept and celebrate anything new you give them.
But like I said, hopefully the new team will deliver eventually.
PS > And about XI being ported to XIV's engine, well that's exactly what XIV was going to be. But then someone (probably Tanaka) decided to go with their own vision instead of delivering as promised. They just reaped what they sew after that.
It is no coincidence the new team is porting as many aspects from XI as they possibly can in recent updates.

Actually there are a lot of players coming back. I have at least 10 players in my ls alone that are returning to the game. To say that people lose money from playing FFXIV? I dont see how that is so, considering there is not a subscription atm. All they had to wait was not even 2 months to see a significant change in the game, that most like myself actually enjoy (if ur even playing it).
If people were so worried about losing out on money they would have stayed longer and not wasted their $70 they spent on the game to begin with. To quit the game before it even has a chance to start, is wasting more money than they would have by staying.
Nevermind that tho, its not the people who quit I have a problem with. It is those who post on the forums claiming the game is this and the game is that when they dont even play it. Past exp with the game means nothing right now, especially since the game is so different now than it was before. All I see are people digging up old graves. No one around here makes any sense when they point the negative finger at FFXIV. The vast majority of the people giving negative opinions about the game are those who have no clue what its actually like right now. That just turns people away from the game with a head full of ignorance.
P.S. If you need proof about the people returning, just look at our member's list. You will notice those who are a bit under leveled compared to the rest. Those are the people who have recently returned to the game. We also dont keep inactive members in our linkshell, so none of those are people that "quit".
Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
They indeed lost money when they bought the game, but the important thing is about not losing time on a game you don't even enjoy just because it may be fun to play eventually.
Now, if players are indeed coming back at least that's a good start.

At least the people you speak of tried the game out. You see A LOT of others jumping on the bandwagon before even trying the game. There are ways to try the game for free without purchasing it, so people cant use that as an excuse as to why they like to play follow the leader.
Those that played FFXI should know that trying a game out in the beginning takes longer than a week. When FFXI was released it was utterly horrible. Look at it now? There is no reason FFXIV cant end up the same way. I mean after all its the same company making it.
Also 90% of the complaints are not about the game itself. In fact none of them have anything to do with the games content. All the reasons people dont like the game can and are being adjusted to suit the player base. All you would have to do would be to realize everything you dislike about the game is fixable, half the stuff is things that need to be tested by actual players before you can set the core values to meet the vast majority. The argument that the game is a paid alpha / beta, well are not all games like that? Every MMO out there go's through changes, none of them are perfect and they are all constantly striving for the same thing. The only difference in FFXIV's case is it was a little behind the rest on release. That is not a valid reason to dislike an MMO. Everyone know's MMO's are not perfect hence why they keep growing and getting better and better over time. This is something every gamer should know. Judging by the mass amount of people who now ride on the negative Nancy bandwagon, most of them don't know this. I have yet to see one person complain about something that is actually worth a read.
Re: A New Year and FINAL FANTASY XIV Player's Poll the First (1/1/2011)
I was a major proponent of FFXIV back when most were bashing it for being "FFXI-2 HD" and to be honest, after having played it thru beta and upon release, I gotta say those people were half right. The game, through beta and release, was half assed, so much to the point that I left FFXIV to go back to Aion and FFXI again. Will I give XIV another shot? Most likely yes because i didnt pay $80 just for the install discs to be used as beer coasters.
You're right Luna, a sensible MMO player knows MMO's dont come out chock full of content, but those same sensible MMO players ALSO know what a WORKING MMO should play like, and FFXIV was nowhere near that. Learn to accept the fact that the game came out looking, playing, and feeling like shit, and only NOW is it actually starting to become playable. SE not charging until the game is fully fleshed out (the way it should have been upon release) is the best move they could possibly make. Quit being so delusional that you don't see all of the ugly that came with FFXIV.
