I'm thinking I'm going to try to get my Blacksmithing up first. From there, I'm not sure. >_<

I think with the recent buff ALC got with shards / crystals that a lot of people are probably going to consider leveling it now. At least to 20 so they can break down their own stuff or make / convert their own shards. I am making a guide right now I am going to post in the resources section that has a list of almost all the shard / crystal combinations that update brought.

Re: What are your plans for leveling?
Well based on the leaks, Ninja = Assassin it seems. And Assassin seems to be in Magic category (Dark Arts), so it's possible that the ninjas in FFXIV won't have dual wielding but be more ninjutsu user based (without requiring tools, just MP/TP.)
But Dark Arts could mean anything for the weapon they hold. Even Thaumaturges and Conjurers equip a weapon to learn their class skills.
Maybe Assassins hold a ninja scroll.

Re: What are your plans for leveling?
well Ninjas really use Ninja Swords, not really daggers, daggers are a THF/DNC thing. oh wait I think NINs can use daggers too, but by the time they reach level 10, it's best to switch to the ninja exclusive kunai and swords.
oh ya I wonder what the class equivalent of Dancer will be like, mew?

Everyone here seems to forget that there's new management, new team leaders and a (somewhat vague) new direction for the game.

Just because there is new management, doesn't mean they are going to dump all the work and classes ready or waiting so far.
Well at least it's pretty much confirmed by the time PS3 version release (which is probably Summer), there will be new War and Magic classes by then, if not before then.
