XIV is just ... clunky. I haven't played it, but I haven't heard really anything good about it. And I can't afford a brand new PC to run it, and for any game, it has to be really spectacular for me to even attempt to spend hundreds of dollars just on a machine that will play it. (Yes, I know I could use another PC for plenty of other things, but I can't justify the expense when this one works just fine.)

For all the joking I used to do about WoW, the UI is solid, I can accomplish several things over the course of an hour, and I don't feel frustrated at my inability to actually finish anything. FFXI got better with that, but not enough to draw me back in. FFXIV seems to have the same problems, but lacks even basic things that a new MMO should have. I think SE tried too hard to make it different but forgot that it should also be at least somewhat intuitive. I've heard of people having problems figuring out how to do basic things, like check an item in their inventory. (Not sure if that's true, just an example I'm giving) That shouldn't be complicated. Searching shouldn't be complicated. Buying gear shouldn't be complicated. It shouldn't be so buggy. With FFXI they had an excuse, and MMOs were fairly new at that point, too. Now? MMOs are a huge market and while I highly doubt anything is going to dethrone WoW, they have to have the same kind of user-friendliness and accomplish-ability or no one is going to play them. I've played a few F2P MMOs that are basically just clones of WoW, they're completely unoriginal but they're easy to get into.

And what pisses me off most about FFXIV is that SE has proven yet again that they can't listen to their players. People gave them feedback throughout the alpha and the beta, and very little changed. Now that people have shown with their lack of desire to pay to play this game, they have started to listen and overhaul the game, but it's too late. I spent 5 years playing FFXI and watching the devs repeatedly ignore feedback from the players and I just got sick of it. As soon as I saw that XIV was going down the same road, I was almost entirely convinced I would never touch it. There is still a part of me that wants to play it, but I'm warily watching from the sidelines until I can find any solid reasons for me to spend the money to buy it.

Unless SE can get their shit together and turn FFXIV into something I'll actually want to play, I'll happily keep logging my ass in to WoW. :D



And Neverslip, you can say it. My LS is elitist. Then again, we were (are?) still one of the best known linkshells across all servers and one of the hardest to get into. I worked my ass off just to get in. I'm very proud of that feat, but it got to be very stressful when I was only given the opportunity to play my WHM 99% of the time. All of my jobs were exceptionally well geared, so it wasn't just that my other jobs were gimp. No, we just needed the WHMs, and I hazzed one.

Ygg, I'm not mad. I'm irritated, but that's because tonight is yet another fucking NCIS rerun and I was hoping for a new ep. And goddammit, apparently not next week either. SDFAGOPDUIGEGDKJGEDUIJK

I played the alpha and beta, I didnt like it either. I stuck around for awhile after release and things in FFXIV seem to be getting back on a more enjoyable level. I have faith in SE to fix the things wrong with it! There are not very many things I want to see changed in the game now that a lot has been fixed.

If you ever want to give it a free try I have a gold pass you can use (the game is also free atm). I know the specs for alpha and beta, well cut that by half to play the game now.

I'm waiting for the PS3 release. At that point, I'll have a bit of money and there will be more changes made to the game. That will be a good time for me to reconsider playing it.

Yeah thats a good idea my best friend IRL has to do the same (he needs a new HDD). At least by then you can only hope they will have everything fixed since they are so set on having a "perfect" release for ps3.

LOL... I ever tell you I was in several endgame LSs and each had an individual or two screw the whole LS over so they could attempt to get into yours?? I always seemed to come in right at the end of the drama in each LS so I never knew much of what had transpired but it always boiled down to: person gets Relic Weapon and leaves LS soon after getting it so they could get into a better LS... One was a LS leader. I don't think any of them got into Excellence but they were never welcomed back really to the ones they left.

I'd never want to be in Excellence. It'd feel even more job-like than this game already tends to be. I never harbored ill-will towards them like some of the other folks I've played with.

Yeah Ex has a lot of haters. A lot of linkshells hated us just because we tended to take the best members from linkshells (some of whom are encouraged to apply, some of whom apply on their own) and that we don't "farm" them ourselves. Which is a pretty stupid reason to hate us. Some hated us because they couldn't get in. And some hated us because they hated Stan (usually) or any of our other members.

I pissed some people off when I left other linkshells to join Ex, too. I had quit my previous linkshell about two months before I actually got into Ex, but they still took it personally because I got loot and left. Which is what happens in every single fucking linkshell ever ... but whatever. And it isn't like I left two seconds after I got something. But some people think that you should stay in a shell forever if you get something from them. It wasn't working out so I left a few weeks later. I feel a bit bad ... but not bad enough to put up with the abuse I'd put up with in that shell just to make a few people feel better about me getting gear.

The thing is, most of those people probably could have gotten in if they'd tried, but they hated the shell so much for taking some of "their" people that they'd never even try.

Endgame FFXI. Serious Business.

I had friends in that LS when it was formed right when Hades was created by SE. I had transferred in from Midgardsormr but I think a lot of the players in EX were from Fenrir and Ramuh. Things changed a lot in EX though and a good many of us didn't like them after a certain drama unfolded in which about 1/2 the members left. This was probably before you started playing the game Aks or maybe you were but weren't anywhere near end game yet.

I don't miss Hades' drama but I do miss some of the people on that server.

I started in 2004 which was right around when Hades was created (was still a pretty new server at that point) and I knew of a lot of drama involving the shell long before I joined but the whole story? I'll probably never know it. Just bits and pieces.

I always love the people who hold ancient grudges though. I mean damn, Ex has been around a long time, and people still hate us for shit that happened 5-6 years ago? And there's maybe three people who have been in the ls the whole time. Probably not even that many, lol. And yeah, Hades drama ... holy shit. When they said Hades was merging with Cerb, I loled, because Cerb and Hades are the two worst servers when it comes to drama. I can't even begin to imagine how it must have been when the merge first hit.

This "EX" you guys are talking about sounds a lot like Kujata's late "Astral Flow" LS (I think it was astral flow... correct me if I'm wrong). I was a member for a while. It started before I joined, but I became a member around late 2007. The leader of the LS (who's name shall not be mentioend for flaming purposes) held the LS bank for Dynamis along with a lot of prestige items obtained from LIMBUS/DYNAMIS/SALVAGE and various BCNMs. The LS had 2 K clubs floating around for use by those who had proven loyalty to the LS over the years. One day in 2009 I remember logging on to see the LS chat in full on eruption.

"THAT MOTHERF***ER!!!!! _________ Left!!!! HE LEFT WITH EVERYTHING!!!!"
"What the F***!!!!!!????"
"Where is he????"
"He changed Servers!!!!!!"
"How do you know?"
"He wasnt on for dyna last night, so i checked his status and his name is no longer valid!!!!"
"So maybe he's offline..."
"I made a new character and his name is available! HE TOOK ALL THE GIL AND BOTH CLUBS!!! THAT MOTHER****ER!!!!!!!"

You get the picture. He got the first (and one of the only that I've heard of) Nirvana's on our server and the next day took both clubs and all the community money and jumped servers. It broke the LS in 2 pieces. Those who still wanted to think he was around and those who wanted his blood.

It was not a pretty sight.

Last I heard he had roughly 100mil and change... 2 clubs his Nirvana and several handfulls of other gear worth over several mil each at the time. Some pieces were his and others were community... some still were borrowed. Those were the ones people got pissed about.

Shit happens. Community pools should never be trusted. The last LS I was in before I left simply all picthed in when Dynamis came around. If you wanted to go... you put money into the pool each time. The more money... the more lotting rights inside. it made perfect sense. if you were short, there was always someone who would spot you if you paid them back... but it was a much more trustworthy system... and it fostered a community effort.

They say that the people make the LS and in EX's case that's very true. EX was not just "excellent" when it was first formed, but the people that were originally a part of that "dynasty" was some of the best friends I've made in an online game. They weren't just preoccupied with camping an HNM spawn but would go out of their way to help anyone at random. Whether it was a lesser NM, AF or just picking up an aggroed bogy, EX was all about community. I won't (and don't want to) get into the drama surrounding the breakup but it was a sad day, not just for the LS and members, but for the server as a whole. EX was so respected that even the JP had nicks for them, like Exy and everyone who wasn't brain dead on that server knew who they were. It's just unfortunate that all that came apart and only the bad stuff preceded their reputation from that point forward.

With that said, anyone know if there's free server transfers available? I want to go back to Midgardsormr since there are no one left on Hades that I know or care about and there's still a lot of my friends playing on Middie.

Transfering is free now. Think it just takes a certain amount of time. I've not done it ever.
