But once I hit 27 Cloth that will reverse fast.
    Q. I am able to choose between using my main hand or off hand tool when beginning a synthesis. What is the difference?
    A. Main hand and off hand tools have varying characteristics which manifest themselves in different ways when a high-quality result is achieved while synthesizing. There are many possible outcomes. For instance, a successful synthesis with a main hand tool may result in a +1 or +2 item, while the result obtained with an off hand tool may be a higher yield of regular quality items.

its a little true with both of your explanations, but as well as basic common sense....

you would have a harder time making chain mail links with a hammer, then you would pliers

Since when does common sense have anything to do with an SE game? Common sense dictates midgets cannot light people on fire with a wave of a stick, as well.

Otherwise... damn. Wish I was a "little person."

And if you'd bothered reading anything over at Eorzea & other forums, there's testing (as well as in-game hints) that the offhand tool is meant to be used for specific recipes. The Spinning Wheel for threads, The Mortar for powders & I believe breaking down crystals, to name a few known examples.

Thing is, the off hand tool is pretty much trash 10-27 since you'll only have the rank1 tool, and from what I've seen, each tool has its own stats and the off hand don't add into the general stats.

So if I'm not mistaken using the offhand is worse than mainhand until the mid 20s upgrade.

Oh you should try this recipe:
Taupe Sheep Leather - Item - Final Fantasy XIV Database - ffxiv.yg.com

I'm not sure how high your leather is but give this a whirl with MH and then OH. I tried 5 straight attempts using MH and all busted, with or without support, common, guild and artisan. Then I used OH and hit successes on Standards all the way through the next 7 attempts. I'm pretty sure this was during the 2nd hour after the Full Moon phase passed.

The offhand should only be used for certain recipes and for most repairs as the success rate for that slot is independent of the system that is being applied to the MH. (i.e., the rank doesn't matter)

Incorrect; I tried to repair someone's bronze celata and it said my Armorer Rank was too low, even though I had the mats.

I've done Taupe Sheep Leather fine with my main hand at R10.

^ Yeah I made some too without any issue.

What my LS buddies and I have found is there are times where the game just seems to arbitrarily want to screw you over, seemingly without any explanation. I mean how else does my 26+ CRP buddy fail 2 rank 10 leves in a row through no fault of his own?

I'm not entirely convinced and my experience seems to give more weight to the Offhand being required for certain recipes (I'm not the only one with this issue, read the comments under that Taupe Sheep Leather ... also I'm talking about Taupe and not Grey). Have you guys tried just using your Offhand for ALL recipes? Let me know what comes out of it. I can tell you that majority of the recipes with your Offhand you're going to fail boat loads, regardless of the rank of the Offhand.

Oh and Mala, I meant rank of the Offhand, not of the recipe or of the participant. Your level 1 Offhand is fine until you're able to equip the next upgrade. The system does not look at the rank of the offhand tool under the "> 10" rule which seems to hold true for your mainhand and the rest of your equipment.

It's a generic message and it also might mean a sub craft is too low.

I repaired a Spiked Bronze Labrys with my offhand tool (rank 1) so I know that the system doesn't check the rank on your offhand. I just think having to upgrade to another offhand when it becomes available and not fret about having to use the mainhand just because you think your offhand is too low.

The real crime, is that the offhand tool doesn't boost your stats but rather is separate from your main hand, which blows.

Now this could very well change for combat classes, but so far it's looking like offhanding a 2nd weapon doesn't do a damn thing for your stats, with the exception I believe of the defense stat on shields. So in otherwords no offhanding +STR items and the like.

I noticed this as well and even successfully crafted with just the Main Hand equpped. This lends even more evidence that the OH plays by a different set of rules than the rest of your gear.
