Hey guys... long time no see... holy cow. Anyway, I have a question to which i'm afraid the answer is so painfully obvious that I'm simply overlooking it out of retarded-ness.

    I'm lvl 15 Physical, 10 Weaver, 10 Conjurer, 10 Thaumaturge, 5 Armorer, 5 Blacksmith and 2 Leatherworking.

I'm trying to focus on Weaving as my main craft, but I chose Gridania as my nation due to it's central location and it's similarity to Windurst . Unfortunately, the Weavers guild is in Lima Limnosa I think... so I have to go all the way there to start working on my Guild ranks. I've tried over and over and over again to walk out of the Black Shroud to go both north and south and have walked right into th zone line only to recieve the message "You cannot proceed" or "you can't go any further" or something like that. I figured it had something to do with the quest and the whole... "greenswrath" thing... but due to the game's incomplete nature, I'm wondering if i'm just.... STUCK.

I tried to go to the airship dock under the guildhall and its not operating flights. I tried to rent a chocobo and the NPC gave a cryptic and "in-poor-taste" message about how everyone wants one and they simply dont have enough. I'm starting to get pissed.

If I didn't need Wind shards/crystals for my crafting, I'd be satisfied hanging in Gridania for a while more... but there are hardly any MOBS who drop wind anything.

Please... someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Is it obvious? am I retarded?

    Re: Travel Woes

Do a shout in town or at an Aetheryte for anyone teleporting to Lima. Offer 10k if no one takes you up after a while and then someone should bite. Remember to save at the Aetheryte in town and then you'll be able to get there no problem.

There are areas that look like they are exits from the zone but then give you that "you can't go any further" bs. It's mostly hit and miss. I will say that I zoned over from Ul'Dah into Girdania territory so it can be done. The problem was that there were MANY MANY aggro mobs in the area I zoned into. I tried to get past them but BZZZZT! ACCESS DENIED! lol They were salamander type mobs (Water Dogs I think they were called) and raptors of some type.

      Re: Travel Woes

Just wanted to add some things here.

      1. Gridania is actually on the far east side of the continent which it is on. Limsa Lominsa can only be reached by boat (the port is on the far west side of that continent) Ul'dah is actually considered "central" of the 3 city-states.

      2. The weaving guild is actually in Ul'dah. This is probably good news for you as it cuts your travel time in half (literally, since the boat ride to Limsa takes about 20 minutes)

It's not difficult to get to Ul'dah and you'll just need to follow the path south out of Gridania (and not the southwest path) Follow the path all the way south and you should not come across any monsters that will aggro you. There will be numerous looped paths and what you want to do (as you're heading south) is always take the left path that goes under the looped paths (taking the right paths will have you go over and then either west or east)

There is just one monster to be wary of and that usually wanders around the first 1/3 of the path down. It tends to stray from the east paths and it's usually as a result of someone aggro'ing it and then running back to the camp there and then dying (but the mob does not despawn) It does not happen a lot and usually some higher ranked player will come by to kill it, but just be aware of it (I think it's a Roseling, a type of plant like creature which uses physical ranged attacks)

When you get into the Ul'dah region (you will be confronted with a loading screen) there's one section you need to be careful about as you head to the city. You will be going along the path out of Black Shroud west. Do not deviate from this path as it runs westerly and along the top half of the map. You will recognize the section break up as you are eventually funneled into a canyon-like section before appearing out into the open again. When you enter this second map section where the city is located, avoid the Antlions if at all possible. Give a wide berth around any that may have strayed from their spawn areas. I'm not really sure what level these monsters are (some say about level 30 due to how hard they still hit a ranked physical 25 player) but they will aggro all the way up to physical rank 25 if within close proximity. You can see the monster dots on your mini-map so try not to be so close to them (you may not see them right away when emerging from the canyon-like section)

Just keep heading west after this part and to the middle. You will find a "T" intersection and if you expand your map view and look at it, you should see the city-state of Ul'dah to the south. In this area, there's only low level monsters that do not aggro so you should be safe.

        Re: Travel Woes

As usual, thank you TGM. Your insight is as helpful as when I played FFXI. I tried a few of the areas you mentioned with no luck and barely dodged a few of the aggro mobs you talked about in those attempts. I'll shout for a teleport when I get home from work and hopefully that will get me there.

Ive noticed that the MOB levels don't increase nearly as gradually as you zone as they did in FFXI. I remember that first subtera dungeon just outside of Gridania to the south housed MObs who one shotted me for over 700 damage when I was level 10. Clearly it's going to take some getting used to before I know where I can and cannot go at what levels.

Is there a way to guage the level of a MOB without engaging it and suffering it's wrath? Some "check" system like FFXI had? Or is that just another of the many bugs left in the system that need to be resolved before we can get a good grasp on the game?

Again, thank you. And you too Aeni! Your play-by-play should be incredibly helpful in getting to Ul'Dah.

Just to be clear... I don't have to reach a certain Rank or physical level in order to venture out to any other zone? These blocks are just some kind of fluke... or access points to areas that are not yet complete, right? Otherwise everything is accessable from lvl 1?

Yes, when you target the mob it will have a colored dot by its name...or in some cases a crown looking icon. RED = STAY AWAY! lol It's basically Incredibly Tough. Orange is Tough, Yellow, is Even Match, Green is Decent, and Blue is Easy Prey.

Awsome. I had a feeling that was what it was. To date I've only ever seen Blue and Red... so I was unsure weather that was to display toughness or just some other kind of classification system. Now that you mention it though, I think I saw one with an orange icon in passing, but it was quickly engaged by another player and I didn't think much of it at the time.

Maybe more like Bastok since Limsa is across the seas. But I have to say, Black Shroud and Gridania are just exceptionally gorgeous areas, just a bit strenuous on the PC.

The agro mob thing is kinda false, but you will know both of the things to stay away from, one is the angler (has a nasty range attack moves pretty slow though) you'll see those in Black shroud on the way down people kill them now, may or may not see them. The other one is the Ant mobs which you'll see right after camp dry bone, you will go through a valley (more like a passage through a mountain then a valley) when you come out the ants will be just off the road. Just avoid them should be fine.

As for wind shards/crystals- sheep and dodos drop the most plentiful amounts from what I've seen.

P.S. It's not that wind shards are hard to come by, just gridania is a bad place to farm them The best place unfortunately happens to be clear across the world (or at least the world we have now.)

If your on limblum I'll hop on to give you a teleport, if I happen to catch your message, I don't play anymore so I probably have the anima for it.

Fighting without knowledge of the battle is like wacking at a tree with a rusty sword badly in need of repair.

P.S. ..if a male mithra is ever made available for this game I don't care what level I am I would start over in a heartbeat. Just something about playing a female as a male that bothers me.. Not for the dex.. but because I like cats

appreciate the help man. I got on this morning and made a day of walking around to every camp for all 3 countries. I started in Ul'Dah and then took the ferry to Lima and killed me about 100 Dodos. I have almost 300 shards now and I've made a healthy profit selling them from my retainer.

Your offer was really nice, but I actually took Selbina as my server out of pure nostalgia. I've since started working on my Crafting more and more. Thankfully I'm starting to get the hang of this new game and hopefully I'll be able to catch up to those who figured it out before me.

I'm already miles ahead of my friends who started with me. They're all in Gridania and gradually getting the hang of the basics. Until they make some more quests, I think I'm just going to max out all of the crafts that I can in the time it takes them all to catch up to me. By then, I'll be able to financially back a few of us through the higher levels.

Thanks again though! If you were on Selbina, I'd tell you to join our LS. Grand Theft Chocobo FTW!!!

Which mob were you referring to? Roselings aggro (not sure if you knew this) and they exist to the east side below the first camp on another area of the extended map portion (you need to go across a stream and through a tunnel or two to find this spot) Many MANY new players seem to want to stray and find themselves bringing these roselings out to the main paths. When they die, the roselings do not respawn or go back to their respawn point. Instead, they sit there and will aggro ANYONE that are within range. I've been hit a couple of times so far from this. It doesn't happen often, but it does. Anglers don't aggro, AFAIK, since I run past them many times and I haven't yet aggroed them once.

I thought Roselings only aggro people who are in active mode. I have stood near Roselings and didn't get aggro but when I went into active mode it stood up straight and started smacking me. And I have been slaughtered by anglers when I've tried to run past them.....maybe they don't like squishy mages?

No, I've been in passive mode, north of Skull camp and went by those roselings and got shot at by two of them for about 500 each (this was when I was around Rank 10 physical/6 maurader ... a while back) I don't know about anglers. I've crossed paths with them several times with no one else around me. Maybe you can piss them off and they go into a hypersensitive state.

Oh the fun of a new game and not knowing mob aggro dynamics! lol I just know that when we'd do a certain leve, we had to go through a narrow area that overlooked the Aetheryte and there was usually an angler or two there. I'm too squishy so one of the guys would sacrifice and run through, aggro the angler, and then run off and hopefully lose it and then come finish the leve with us. So definitely an aggro mob in certain areas of Gridania (or however its spelled).

Yeah I have a burning hatred for anglers, thats why (if I ever play again) I will never do a mining leve in gridania, they like to put the nodes next to anglers and wolves XD (I could kill them now... but still...). But honestly even if I do go back everyone has all but quit that I play with on limblum so I will probably do what I did in ff11 and figured out which sever the majority of ffxionline plays on and head there, I don't personally mind starting over the only hard part will be getting a crafting class up.

If you came back, I'd gladly welcome you with me on Selbina. I'm currently mostly alone. I suffered the same problem that you did. A lot of the people I joined with have quit and I've been left alone with my hopes of a brighter tomorrow for FFXIV. I'd have no problems with getting you back up to speed with my stockpile of crystals/shards and crafting materials for all jobs. Let me know if you ever want back and you'll have at least one loyal friend in-game.
