Re: How to Join a Party!

Eeerrm...Can someone name an MMO that doesn't copy and paste terrain or take an area and recolour it for instances?

And no, WoW doesn't count due to Icecrown Citadel, and Aion doesn't either due to the fact that you don't see the copy paste terrain unless you rift a lot.

There's Copy and Paste in games and then there's Copy and Paste in games.

      Big difference.

        All online RPGs...

        Scratch that.

        All RPGs cut-and-paste.

        Online or offline.
        Japanese or Western.

        Cut and paste geography
        Cut and paste NPCs
Cut, paste and even re-skin enemies.

Just the way it is. Some do it to larger degrees and some to lesser. Faulting an MMORPG for it is a bit silly.

Oh sure, WoW cities look impressive... until you go into the houses, then they're all the same.. FFXI towns stay fairly unique, but that's because all the copy pasta is outside of them. Pso'xija is the Horutoto Ruins on Steroids. There are three versions of South Sandoria, almost two versions of every other zone on the mainlands. I wouldn't put it past SE to create Dynamis - Heaven's Tower at some point.

The thing is with HD that you're just going to see more of it. Because these assets are so expensive to produce it will be a necessary evil or it will be a really small world.

Until the expense begins to even out - and its just barely starting to get there - we're going to see companies banging their heads on a wall, making smaller games or retreating to the handheld market.

I'm not bothered by copypasta zones at all.

I guess I don't give much attention to rocks, trees and holes in the ground to see that stuff, and nether should anybody, if you're gonna get up in arms about that, there are patterns on cloth, streets, roards, duplicate NPCs/enemies all over all the games out there.

Like I saw 2 Dodos and they were like... identical. (trust me, I counted feathers)

What really gets to me is that city states have no houses in the at all. (where do the NPCs live?!)

What bugs me is that I'm not a map person. I use features of the terrain to navigate. I'll glance at my mini map once in a while but I mostly just use what I see around me. Now add in the fact that there is a lot of copy/paste terrain in the game and that equals me going "WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT/AM I!?" a lot. lol

After the rediclous speed in Armored core 4A, I now rely completely on the mini map. (in AC4 your enemies were so fast that you can barely spot them, so you needed to use the radar to find them)

To avoid the UI, I use the 1st person mode and just navigate with the numeric keys and the mini map so I never noticed the copied terrains. but with the areas I roam in you just follow the road so... its still not worth it.

I guess when they put in mines and such to explore it'll be an issue.

In a "real forest", there are still little differences that you will eventually notice. Nothing is exactly the same. "Basically the same" does not mean "identical".

And it's not just that they went copypasta, it's the scale of it. Even if you ignore the circled stuff, one of those maps has a whole bunch of pincushion shaped areas clearly rubber-stamped all over it. Because every mountain (or whatever those are) in the real world is exactly the same shape. And they didn't even bother to rotate shit other than on multiples of 90 degrees. The gridlines on the map just make it more painfully obvious.

I guess they took their name too seriously... I mean, SquareSoft?
