They should at least waive the subscription fee until the game is in a state that people are willing to pay for, which so far they have essentially done. That's just good sense considering people aren't even sticking it out through the trial period. Fat chance they refund anything though. Sorry, people who bought 6 months worth of crysta up front.

The thing is, launch numbers pretty much determines the size of the subscription base for the life of the game. With FF14 starting to badly, I think SE may be able to make more money over the game's lifetime by shutting it down, revamp it (drastically), and re-lunch it like it's a new game (which it pretty much would appear to be).

Anyway, that's what I think SE should do, but I doubt the company can admit how much of hole it dug itself into this time, and more likely will flounder around uselessly.

      yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

They need to give players something to look forward to. What kind of leves can they look forward to? What are the points they're earning for the different factions for? What are those factions, and what can they do for the player?

SE has a really pretty stick right now, but they're lacking the carrot. What will keep us going? We really have no idea what there is for us as the game progresses.

ya I think the necessary gameplay fixes are important, but just as important are the stories! There has to be lots of main story missions to keep players going! Bosses and cutscenes and stuff too! If they can at least complete the story until the first "Shadow Lord" of the story, they can then expand the other areas, like more War/Magic classes, NMs, and other stuff.

But ya story is pretty important and one of the main things that gives even mmorpgs a greater purpose.

I mean there are many that are eager to meet the Empire and do missions related to fighting them, mew.

            Very good idea. /nod

SE should release Theater mode so people could just watch the cutscenes without having to play the crappy game!
            \(^-^)/

Heck, I'd buy that version of XIV.

Sankaku Complex is even more obsessed with XIV than with Hirano Aya.

He enthuses about item charges in an address to investors, the same one where he revealed the company would be scrambling to regain lost trust:
“I get the impression that ‘Dragon Quest’ type users and ‘item charge’ type users have quite different feelings [about a business model based on charging for items]. With the likes of Facebook, you can easily introduce friends and things spread quickly, so I feel it’s well suited to item charges, with the game being free.”
He went on to suggest the proportion of revenues accounted for by item charges will be increased from 30% to 40%.

Just whether item charging will make its way into some of Square Enix’s traditional franchises (presumably what is meant by his “Dragon Quest” reference) seems difficult to predict, although even Wada seems cautious if his comments above are any guide.

However, Final Fantasy XIV in particular was designed from the outset to appeal to casual gamers, so a free version with charges for items, skills and other content does not seem entirely outside the realms of possibility.
              I'll just withhold comment.

So, Yoichi, how do we really make this a failure? I mean we screwed up pretty good, but to really make it spectacular, what do we have to do?

That amount of fail is just...off the charts.

                    Wow ... just ... wow.

Which is, incidentally, what I'm playing that is (from what I've seen/read/heard) a million times more fun than XIV.

I hope this isn't the end of SE, and their FF series. I sure do hope they can get back on track and fix all their fails...

Well this IS Sankaku people. Pinch of salt and all that. Squeenix made a big loss sure but it's nowhere near as bad as what the troll who runs that site is making it out to be.

The "shares plunging" for instance was from the time where that guy sold all of his shares and the share price went down...For about 12 hours...You also have to consider where this loss is coming from. Opening up a brand new MMO for instance requires servers and staff to maintain them as well as all of the advertising and programmers to write patches and new content. It all costs money and no MMO in existence has made a profit from launch, nor have they began as anything less than an obvious beta.

I think I miss people beating the head horse and declaring that the latest FF game is anathema over people thinking that a company is "dewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwmed!" because they just had a massive expense couples with disappointing sales with a new release that caused said expense.

Well, this is the company that released the add-on scenarios (read: $10 apiece for some decent RDM melee gear for once). If it came right down to it, I wouldn't put it past them.

It doesn't take a great deal of effort to check the stock price history over at the Square-Enix site to confirm their stock has fallen and has continued to do so since the release of FFXIV.
