FFXIV gets a 4.0 from Gamespot and other reviews & hilarious discoveries about FFXIV
Yes, because it's much less irritating to run around 1ft high obstacles than to watch other people jump.
There aren't as many of those obstacles in the game and the outlines are clearly defined in your minimap so you can plan ahead on how you're walking. If everyone just constantly jumped around, you can get d/c, believe it or not. The information overload to the servers with regards to positioning that has to be constantly updated as a result of jumping and multiplied by several 10s or even 100s isn't exactly a good way to keep the server from crashing. And it's not like SE needs additional problems to deal with lest they decide they're not going to bother with working on content and upgrades and rather having to be forced in dealing with ... jump abusers.

Oh its not that bad! My god, you have to walk an extra 2 seconds to go around a short cliff....are people really this lazy or just wanting to jump on the "FFXIV is shit!" bandwagon?
And yes, it is MUCH less irritating to spend that extra 2 seconds then watching masses of idiots jumping around like fucking monkeys.

God I hate my periods. You think passing a clot through a vagina is bad? Try it with a penis.

I guess it's a preference thing then, the jumping in WoW never bothered me. And to be truthful, I didn't know how many of those barriers there are, if they're common or uncommon. If it's few and far between then fine, but the way the video gave it, (obviously misleading) it seemed like a huge issue.
And yeah, I'm sure it would D/C me since the game is a resource hog, but on a game like WoW it didn't bother me in the slightest, didn't cause lag in the slightest, either, so because SE is intent on making resource heavy games that require supercomputers to run (lol kidding, sort of) I guess jumping wouldn't be that big of a deal to need. Though I will say, it's 2010, some of the stuff missing from this game seems glaringly obvious.
I will say that certain invisible barriers in XI used to bug the shit out of me.

It's because Blizzard shut off positioning with regards to jumping (removed the "player + vertical positioning" code thing) from a long time ago. That lead to problems with travel time associated with ranged attacks (i.e., arrows and arcane missiles) and that end up being even more problems down the road.

That's no excuse, there could be contextual jumping for going up and down ledges and things like that.
I wouldn't want to see people hopping around like bunnies either, but with the distances in XIV there's no reason to make players go around low obstacles in the terrain if they aren't serving a purpose.
sigpic "In this world, the one who has the most fun is the winner!"C.B.
I'm guilty of being one of the players that likes to hop around, but I only do it because it gives me a button to press and be mildly entertained as I'm travelling somewhere.

There's technical issues with jumping. It's prone to exploitation for one (WoW has a ton of exploitation and even with a restrictive environment, due to being able to jump, players can get around a lot of restrictions) and then there's the other issue of having to develop "sensors" built into every part of a map. God knows that you can get away with that in WoW due to the simple graphical display requirements but trying to do that in FFXIV will require a rig that needs to break the 10,000 point barrier in the benchmark.

You can watch videos while you're alt-tabbed from the game. Some parts of the map you can get away with the auto-run feature. I play SC2 while the boat takes me across the waters. lol

Every time I alt+tab out, I always come back to a message saying "You have been raped by a giant ant! Watch where you're going, asshole!"

It's funny how every other recent MMO has managed to implement jumping in their games despite the "technical issues". There's zero reason to not have jumping in a game other than to act as an additional impediment to player progress. S-E are past masters at making the player endure hours of worthless shit in order to achieve the simplest of tasks, anyone believing otherwise is simply deluding themselves.
