Sad to say, but I'm quite pleased I talked some weird guy from the eden linkshell on limblum into letting me use his buddy pass. Because if I had actually spent any money on this game I would be significantly pissed. The day I had a 7 min fight for my life against a lady bug on my lancer using all sorts of skills and movement and frantic second winds, bloodbath attacks and shadowbinds, and got 0 xp because not one skill up proced, was about the moment that I began to question myself about this game.

I am currently on the fence about it, I do nothing but solo unless a behest is up, half the time I'm trying to figure out why I frequently have fights where I end up with 20 or lower xp because the game decided it wants to scold me like a child for attempting to use Doomspike (2000 tp move takes extra tp to do extra damage so 2000-3000 basically) and slaughtering the monster too quickly to get ...skill ups which are my actual xp.

More often then not I find myself in situation with monsters that can potentially give me 0-500 job xp, and I end up with 0-50 wasting my time and effort and what ends up happening is I have to kill thing far over my level just so I can get the average xp from a mob that would of been suitable because I kill the suitable too quickly.

So to shorten this to what I'm trying to convey...
Thank god I got buddy pass on the 22nd and torrented the game. Because whoever at s-e thought it was a good idea to make skill ups now function as your xp gain for a fight, seriously is a complete and total moron and I refuse to pay money to tediously kill things on a game and 3/4ths of the time get little to no gain because of a flawed xp gain system.

I find it hard to even get up the drive to even log into the game anymore.

Side note, yes I know everyone has this gripe with the game, but when it's fresh and new, this shouldn't be my impression one month into it. I feel like I'm maplestory grinding. I feel like I'm playing a korean mmo with an outsourced crafting system from some billionaire company, that paid off another company to design it's graphic's engine but can't keep up with the development system.

The fighting system is great, but I can't gain xp.

This sums up my experience thus far...

Yes I could change this by grouping, but guess what that is further hindered by the fact that the group kills the monster even faster even though it's higher thus making it even more tedious to level. They don't need to put bonuses into the xp system for playing with others (though it is nice). What s-e needs to do is give the monsters a minimum value of xp. Make it so skill ups are extra xp not the only xp. Make it so when I doomspike something and I see "You gain 65 lancer skill points" I'm not saddened by the fact that I just did 500 damage to the mob it's going to die in 3 more hits and if I don't get another proc all I'm going to get for killing this yellow conned monster is.... 65 xp.

No game should make you feel like your wasting your time for wining a fight with all you have to offer. And honestly leveling in this game is like a skill up party in ff11, it's lucrative as long as you take off all your atk gear, +str gear, best weapon, don't use anything that does passive damage to the monster (shock spikes, punishing barbs, skull sunder, poison, bio, elemental dots), make sure the monster is at least orange to you, that it's in it's natural area no using bind it may reset position, and lastly gimp your gear so that the healer can get xp from the damage you take). These are flaws that s-e wont change because their vision involves this screwed up skill up system for leveling up.

Honestly it wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't for the fact that with all this I am physical rank 28ish, but that doesn't mean shit because my physical stats are capped any fuckin way. At lancer level 14...

Fortunately though the buddy pass users got 60 free days so -shrugs- they have till the end of nov to fix this for me, otherwise I'll go back to play dungeon fighter or something to pass the time and just spend the money I would of spent on pay to play to instead by cash shop things for my ugly many Crusader.

So... is XIV salvageable? Though nothing would make me happier than seeing Squeenix publicly admitting they should've kept their promise and have made theDX9 client for XI instead, I still wanted to give XIV a try eventually.

And you know things are bad when all the people complaining about the game simply stop and never mention it again. Which means they have just moved on.

Not only that, at least in Fenrir things have been weird in the past couple of weeks, last night there were less than 1k people online at one point, and right now there were 830-ish before I logged out (I'm still 12 skill levels from capping sword again orz)

So, is freaking XIV dragging XI along with it into failureland?

In my eyes yes it is, but... unfortunately for S-E. They don't have all the time they would like to do so, because they launched themselves into a pool infested with sharks, (willingly) without protection or scuba gear expecting to fight them off with a wooden stick and pretty hair. I mean the first sign that they screwed up was having to give people unpaid time so they would stick around just a little bit longer. I myself find myself longing for that feeling I got in late October 2003 when I started playing ffxi. I find myself missing the xp system in xi, I find myself wishing I could just go back to xi not because I was expecting ffxi-2... But because the state of things here is dismal. Sure I could grind for hours get the xp to get higher, wait for new content, craft my ass off in my spare time... but why. MMO's are never complete I know that. But in all honesty I don't see this game holding much of it's user base beyond the free trials. Too many things stand in the way of those that would like to enjoy their experience. Too many things make it harder and harder to have fun. And most people who left XI don't want to step backwards anymore which is why I feel it will drag XI into the depths with it.

FFXIV feels like work... A statement that is often said about any mmorpg, problem in it though is....

...It's not usually said about a game a month into release.

Lets just hope this doesn't end up like ragnarok online 2.... Where they basically had to scrap the whole damn ideal and start over. Because honestly they can fix the shortcomings of XIV. They just need to want to.
Because as it stands FFXIV is a crafting system away from being a free to play game in desperate need of cash shop xp boost.
You can reinvent the wheel... which S-E tries to do every single time... problem is every time they do it all they end up making is a SQUARE

Edit: I realized the statement at the end could leave people to believe I am a moron for playing Square -> square enix games so I will clarify what I mean so it doesn't get misconstrued. Every time sqenix does something right they follow it up by screwing up like a fat kid who just lost 10 pounds then goes to buy 10 dollars worth of cake to celebrate.

It's been like that since February during EU and JP times but I'm saddened to see it's crept into NA hours as well.

I too was hoping that FFXIV was going to be a success but even so was on the fence whether I was going to pick it up or not. FFXI ate enough of my RL for a number of years and regardless of their promises I didn't see FFXIV being any less of a timesink especially after seeing the newly implemented, and frankly disgusting, timesinks introduced in the older game recently. There is a little malicious part of me that would like to see FFXIV tank in an epic way just to serve as a slap across the face of S-E. These FAQs are a fucking joke and seven years after I started playing FFXI Square still is one of the worst MMO companies on the market for player communication. Until I see some honest, two-way communication between developers and players I can safely say I'll never touch another Square MMO again.

It improved considerably (at least on JP time) after the lvl 80 cap and the new trials then.

I consistently saw more than 1300+ people online while I was teaming up with JP players back when I was on trial-maniac mode. Good times.
