  • Happy about my old PC for FFXIV

So I gave my girlfriend my 3 1/2 year old PC since hers pooped out. The only upgrades I performed were 2 gigs of extra memory, a bigger PSU and an ATI 4850 to replace the dual 8600 GTs. However, the 4850 started crashing and would not run the beta on her PC, and was also crashing during WoW. So we put the 8600GTs back in and as I expected, FFXIV ran horribly.

I started to think about pricey upgrades so she could play, and was worried that maybe we wouldn't be able to after all. I grabbed the CE on Friday for both her and myself, and after all was installed, we decided to give the 4850 one more shot. I had heard that a new driver had been released so I crossed my fingers and hoped it would solve the issues.

To our surprise, the card is running flawlessly now and FFXIV actually runs quite decently with high settings on my older PC. Lame story is lame, I know. I just wanted to say that I'm glad FFXIV will run at a nice graphical setting even on a mid-ranged ish system, and I'm glad I didn't have to shell out more money XD

Game is gorgeous, and was enjoying what I saw of the combat/guildleve systems. She and I will be on Besaid, so if anyone happens to be there, say hello to Rythwen Dawnhammer. :3

    /end lame thread

My friend was playing on a 4850 and I was surprised how good the game looked. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between his visuals and mine on my dual GTX 460s. I would probably have to put them side by side to notice anything.

I'm excited to get everything up and running on my new PC. Hoping to have the game running tonight.

You can easily bump the 930's multiplier up to 150 with a half-way decent cooler, it should run at about 3.3GHz at that speed.

Depending on your GPU brand, you may also be able to OC that, but it depends on its cooling.

I've still only got the stock cooler, so I'm hesitant to try my hand at OC'n it until I get a new cooler.

You could possibly run double resolution. As for your older PC running the game and looking as good as it is on the newer PCs, I wonder if SE didn't pull back on the quality. Because the game (imo) actually looks a bit worse than it did in Beta. If you guys haven't noticed yet, look very carefully at the character models, the lighting and the shading. I have stuff turned on to max and it looks worse than it did in Beta with mid-level settings. I think SE gave into the demands but at the same time destroyed the quality of the visuals. I hope they add back in the "max" settings and have everyone just play the current settings as "normal".

I agree. I had stuff maxed in beta and had issues running the game so I turned stuff down. In retail, I had it the same way but my son came in and maxed everything. I was amazed that my pc ran fine. Something had to be tweaked because it was impossible for me to run it like that before.

                I confirm this aswell.

I'm getting double the performance I was getting at beta with my GTX470 (can't sli yet T___T)

Re: Happy about my old PC for FFXIV

Double resolution killed my FPS. I turned off AO and set resolution to double, and probably had under 10 FPS for the minute I spent checking it out. The game looked good, but I didn't spend enough time trying to tell the difference.

This may sound dumb, my 'monitor' is my 40" HDTV. Will the size of my screen effect what I should set the buffer at, or any of the settings for that matter?

Change the resolution to the highest setting, that's all I did on my 37" HDTV (1080p on mine).

Yes. Size of the screen doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the resolution, which for most large HDTVs is 1920x1080 (1080p).
