Mhurron is of the "fuck the firmware, I do what I want" persuasion; most of the useful features in routers are software, not hardware.

Also, walked by these at TGS. They're quite a bit smaller than the pictures made me think they were.

Consumer routers don't perform any better because they're in a custom enclosure, or because they're running on a low power MIPS or ARM processor. You don't get real hardware backed routing and switching as an option until you hit $700-$1000 and up and it has Juniper or Cisco printed on it. Consumer routers route and switch the same way that a desktop converted to work as a firewall does, using the primary system processor.

Just because it is an appliance sold to do one thing does not make it a hardware router.

A 486 has more then enough power to route a 10/100 home/small office network and a pentium can easily handle a Gigabit. You have to really be pushing a lot of packets for an ASIC to make any noticeable difference. No, one or two movies streamed across a gigabit network is not a lot of traffic. Neither is a bittorrent transfer, that is just gobbling up bandwidth.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.
