Its Kotaku spazzing about parts of FFXIV's overworld being reused.

Complaining about recycled assets in an MMORPG or just an RPG period is a tad ridiculous. Necessary evil is necessary. You want huge, detailed worlds? There's part of the price you pay to have that.

There are parts of Mount Z in FFXI that are ripped right out of Ifrit's Cauldron. They're just skinned differently. Pso'xja is just reskinned Horutoto Ruins with different lighting. Parts of Miseraux Coast and Lufaise Meadows are pulled right of La Theine Plateau.

And these things can be totally ignored if you choose to cast photographic memory aside and just play the fuckin' game.

No, they are saying they copy and pasted areas in the game. That's all. But all games do it to save money.

Developers create assets that the world is built from, it isn't any different with any other game. The scale may differ, but this isn't anything to spazz out over.

Eh? if nobody pointed it out I would have never noticed, unless its a city scene where its easy to spot reoccurring buildings them sure I might catch it but theres no way in hell I can remember stuff like rocks and small cliffs since I already think they all look the same.

Not bothered one bit by it, and if they think that SE will scrap zones to create more rocks they can forget it.

Two words.... Who cares!

The environment will be epic anyway, so what if some areas are using the same terrain shapes. Nit picking is attrocious, it seems there really struggling to find negatives about the game and so start to nit pick little things like this that noone really is bothered about.

And just where does he complain? He heard that this was happening, here are the maps with the appropriate parts highlighted, and you see if there is copy and pasting going on. 6 lines, no complaining, and its from a JP article so not even his own idea. Honestly, get off the guys ass.

Mount Zhayolm's copy/paste is waaaay too obvious. But it's not a bad thing. Since you'll rarely bother with that in the few seconds you'll spend traveling through it's tunnels.

It would be nice if developers used those neat randomized terrain tools to make less artificial looking environments (redundancy ftw) though. Well... it would be nice for the 5 people who would notice anyway.

Not only is there nothing remarkable about the "news" he presented, the very posting of it was unprofessional and irresponsible. Posting about there being copypasta in a game - something all games are quite guilty of - is about the most inane thing you could post.

If its going to be something so inane, why post it at all? Blog filler or veiled trolling for hits is about all I can take from this. Either way, its a waste of space.

A blog isn't a newspaper, its needs no padding. No professional outlet would accept this as real work. He totally deserves to be railed on considering he posted complete garbage.

Kotaku's astoundingly stupid. They just need to look at WoW, where obviously a gazillion people don't care, and see the "reuse abuse" run rampant throughout that game. They used assets from the first release in their recent LK expansion and just recolored and retextured (better quality) and in some cases swap stuff around to form something else. This isn't anything new. ALL GAMES DO IT. Halo, Super Mario Bros ... anything you can think of.

I wouldn't have gone to Kotaku today if not to explain what J9 was puzzled over. This article only affirms why I don't go to Kotaku that much. Its not because they posting something seemingly negative about FFXIV, but because much of Kotaku's content is just like this.

Sorry, I was a Journalism major. While I might not live within the profession, there is a certain standard expected for content, like importance. This article would be like printing the most insignificant part of President Obama's most recent speech. Even a production editor - who manages the space on a page and catches all else that slips through the cracks - would roll his eyes at shit like that and ask for something better to fill the gaps with.

Thankfully, my production editors always had plenty of content from me. Oh, but they were hell on other people. In a blog, you are your own production editor. If you just post some bullshit, people are right to call you on it. I would be reluctant to call being a production editor an "art" - considering how irate and anal-retentive they can be - but the pressure they exert does have a sort of merit to it. Its a merit lost on some bloggers.

when I blog, do I write as though the production editor exists? Yes, I actually do. I do the things that would provide him with the least amount of work and stress because he already has enough. Otherwise you have to persuade him to put the boxcutter down with promises of free beer.
