Been looking around a bit but can't find the info, does anyone know if the internet speed for FFXIV will be capped at 56k like FFXI's is?

Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV
no its not, PS3 cant run off 56k anyway, so if anything they would cap it at DSL speeds if they cap it at all.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I said that a PS3 can not run on 56k, as in, it has no modem for one, and can only be connected to the internet with DSL or higher.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blast it, but kinda figured :/
Still on dialup over here sadly.
You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV
Game requires broadband and the faster your speed and lower your latency the more of an edge you will have over other players. The JP players will have some advantage yet again (where they had one due to server locale in FFXI) this time it's because their country adopted a broadband model many years before other countries did. In fact, Japan, Korea and some countries in Europe have a definite advantage (per capita) Broadband penetration in this country is only around 40-45% last I checked with a LOT of people still on dial-ups.

Pity. Really looking forward to the time I can get at least something other than dialup.

Before you guys go and rip on me about how I feel about our government ... remember that not too long ago, they subsidized heavily and even contributed in a major way the laying out of telephone lines and electrical grid/power lines. If they didn't, it's not at all impossible to find many communities without electric/telephone service in this day and age. Think about that for one moment.

Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV
What an ignorant post. Japan and Korea are TINY compared to the United States. Do you honestly believe that people living in the mountains in Japan have high-speed internet? No, and the same goes for people in rural areas in the United States, as well as all countries around the world. I don't know of any major metropolitan area in the U.S. that doesn't have a cable or DSL provider, and most of those providers offer services for areas surrounding major cities, up to a certain distance.

Or in Sweeden, where 100mbit Ethernet is available to every resident in the country?
Give up the jingoism and realize that the entire western world, save for Canada, has significantly better Internet access in rural areas then the US's best retail speed in the most densely populated areas of 'the greatest nation on earth.'

Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV
limited gov't types aren't really to blame. it's more a function of state-granted monopolies to providers than anything else. truly free competition would drive prices down and improve quality of service. unfortunately, that's not the way our system works, and it doesn't matter if you're a democrat or republican, both parties are selling us out for corporate interests.Character: Bricklayer

Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV
The U.S. economy is based on capitalism, not strict governmental control in all areas (although it's heading that way). If you want the government to control every aspect of your life, but provide cable internet to hillbillies, then feel free to move to any of a number of countries that are set up like that.
Read this article from the WA Post (which I'm betting is Aeni's original source): Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future - washingtonpost.com
You completely ignored my point about country size, which is addressed in this article, along with the fact that high-speed service is being rapidly expanded due to strict governmental regulation. Run a speedtest (Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test) from your location to the nearest other server, then run it from your location to a distant server and you may begin to understand how Japan can have "faster internet." That notion is very misleading. Yes, they do have more widespread fiber service, but only because the government paid for it all (meaning the people did). Surely you've noticed that a large percentage of the U.S. gets upset whenever the government steps in and bails a company out. How do you think those same people would react if the government chose one company to disperse fiber-optic lines across the entire country and funded them to do so? It may be good for the country in the long run, but allowing government to step in like that creates a very slippery slope towards more governmental control and regulation.
This article is incredibly liberal for the Post... it's written with a pretty "haha, Japan is better" underlying theme. However, you can't ignore the subtle facts.
Go ahead and ignore me if you're an ultra-liberal, Japan fanboy, anti-American, or just too dense to understand.Last edited by abknight; 09-07-2010, 08:36 AM.Gatts - PLD75/WAR37
