Re: Q on internet speeds for FFXIV

It may seem silly, but I've noticed a huge trend of anti-American foreigners on all my old favorite forums lately... Either it was not like this when I was younger, or I just didn't catch it. I added this option in direct response to Mhurron's "greatest nation on earth" slam.

Read this article from the WA Post (which I'm betting is Aeni's original source): Japan's Warp-Speed Ride to Internet Future - washingtonpost.com

You completely ignored my point about country size, which is addressed in this article, along with the fact that high-speed service is being rapidly expanded due to strict governmental regulation. Run a speedtest (Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test) from your location to the nearest other server, then run it from your location to a distant server and you may begin to understand how Japan can have "faster internet." That notion is very misleading. Yes, they do have more widespread fiber service, but only because the government paid for it all (meaning the people did). Surely you've noticed that a large percentage of the U.S. gets upset whenever the government steps in and bails a company out. How do you think those same people would react if the government chose one company to disperse fiber-optic lines across the entire country and funded them to do so? It may be good for the country in the long run, but allowing government to step in like that creates a very slippery slope towards more governmental control and regulation.

This article is incredibly liberal for the Post... it's written with a pretty "haha, Japan is better" underlying theme. However, you can't ignore the subtle facts.

Go ahead and ignore me if you're an ultra-liberal, Japan fanboy, anti-American, or just too dense to understand.

You're, um, 'argument', would make more sense if you could explain the following:

      Or this -

Japan - 'KDDI will charge 5,985 yen (~$60 USD) in basic monthly fees for Internet and telephone services, down 1,155 yen' - 1 Gbit internet connection (symetrical)

      NYC - Verizon FIOS 50Mbit Down / 20Mbit Up for $130.

Again, NYC is really spread out compared to Japan, isn't it. The US and Canada have the worst broadband penitration in the western world, and the worst available speeds in areas where there is broadband, whether you are talking about cities or rural areas.

"Verizon wasn’t focused on offering 50-Mbps or 100-Mbps service as some cable companies were for $89 a month and up. That’s simply too much money for mainstream customers, particularly when people don’t know what to do with that much speed."

Oh and BTW, the US government already did spend billions to bring broadband to rural areas, thanks to the largest telecoms and cable companies writing the bill however, they never really had to deliver anything in exchange for the money.

Ah the world in black and white, or in your case republican and democrat, conservative and godless liberal.

Is it hard to ignore the world around you to keep your focus on what you believe is true, or do you have so much practice you can't even see that you could be wrong?

If only more people knew that money was basically just handed over to the telecoms for nothing maybe they'd be more outraged over what we get. ISPs have actually filed suits against people trying to set up better broadband because some ISPs (most) will ignore their customers until someone actually does something to push them to move forward. And only then, while using the suit to keep a new ISP from being created will they do what their customers wanted. Its freakin awful.

The price charged is in no way relative to the quality of service provided. I live in Indiana and pay 1/3 of the NYC price you listed for the same speed. Land in NYC is outrageously expensive despite being of no better quality than that in surrounding areas. Wealthy people live there and are willing to pay a premium for services. Companies will charge what they believe consumers are willing to pay. Your argument based on price is completely flawed and is not even related to my previous post.

The original topic of debate was why broadband hadn't reached particular areas. I have argued that the U.S. promotes capitalism and that the majority of taxpayers don't want additional governmental regulation. This is in direct contrast to what Japan has, which, along with the facts that their population is less than half and total square mileage less than 1/26th of the United States', will allow them to provide higher speed internet to a larger percentage of their total population, but open the door for more controls nationwide.

You accuse me of being blind, but you are ignoring the macro view. Utilizing ad hominem and changing the subject are not strengthening your already-confused point of view.

Ok, so the question from the OP has been answered and this topic is off the beaten tracks...its also getting out of hand. So with that said....

Thread closed....so sue me but some people don't know how to debate issues without throwing around nasty little barbs.
