Ok dude, are you not Dura from Crystal Guardians?

I ran into someone named Durahan Solo today in beta but it wasn't the Dura I know.

Nope, but I was the guy you ran into earlier. LOL I was in TheEternalFlames on Leviathan server in FFXI.

Yes, an auction house in FFXI made life so much simpler. Too bad they don't have one in FFXIV yet. I remember somewhere though that they will be putting on in after the official release.

As far as I can see, there are two places that LOOK sort of like merchant outposts on the map near Ul'dah, the Silver Market and Gold Market or something similar. Anyone on Lindblum and into crafting? I'd love to throw money at you so I can have pants. :<

Really? That will be useful. I can't really see how there can be any decent economy if everyone needs to run around and buy things from bazaars...

Yea. A LOT of games run off a bazaar system, but very few games actually use an auction house. The ones with the auction house usually tend to have people that have up to date gear, and can be trusted to tank something for you, or beable to deal damage at a decent rate and so on. The game with just abazaar system just make it harder. Its nice to have a bazaar so you can sell stuff of the auction house with out having to run to an auction house every time you want to sell something.

I just hope to see an auction house kinda like a combo of FFXI's and WoW's. Where it doesn't show the price history, but the current rate of all the other items. Like it shows how much some one wants for an item, but you can search it by FFXI's type of search function.

That was their point. They don't want people monopolizing the economy right from the get go. Hence, the bazaars and the prices of things not so constant and easily priced.

The AH is in, but just closed off.

Yea, but without an auction house, it must be hard to get stuff you need like a shield and pants like I've seen people complaining about on forums, and comments in videos.

I see a lot of people trying to craft, but I doubt a lot of people are going to take it seriously until release.

How do you monopolize something using the AH in any way you can't not by using the AH?

Because, generally, people have no idea what to price an item and where to go for it. They run around willy-nilly trying to find that item. When they finally find it, it may cost 2x what the guy next to them is selling it for, but when they finally find it, they don't care anymore. They buy it and never know that they could of gotten it for half of what they just bought.

Prices are not set in stone like they are with many (I did not say most) of the items in an AH. When an economy first starts up and there's a person farming a certain item, they are able to generally dictate how much that item goes for. Without an AH, people will have to search for that item.

I'm not explaining it as well as I should be, but I hope you get the idea. Honestly, in my opinion, not having an AH at the start only helps a little bit. When they do activate the AH, it's just going to back to even pricing and some running the market on certain items.

And why is this a good thing?

Prices aren't dictated by whoever obtains the item first, they are dictated by supply and demand. In the real world, this works because when you need something, you go to the corresponding store; Need bread? Go to a bakery. Need some clothes? Go to a tailor. NPCs function similar to this in MMOs, but player interactions don't because players can't own stores. The closest thing they have is a bazaar, but there is no such thing as a "bread bazaar" or a "clothes bazaar", these is just a generic bazaar. So if someone needs something, they need to check every single person selling anything on the small chance they might have it, and after a certain point they either find it, or they stop looking. This creates false demand by restricting supply, and is not the foundation for a healthy economy.

Here's the dumb thing I discovered. My retainer got parked (automatically, you got no say) at an area closed off to everyone in beta. How's that for genius?
