More or less, you just stated that the game didn't get better because SE updated it, but because eventually people overcame myths or just needed new content to overcome their illusions about the game.

DRG, for example, was never a "gimped DD" - its just people were too chickenshit to fight birds. MNK faced the same issues for a while. We'd just take them against crabs, but not what they were great against. Oh and we did crabs because of NINs, PLDS were "bad" because they had to get hit (horror of horrors, a tank getting hit).

Its not just "people were idiots" it was "we were idiots."

Except no one whats to think of themselves that way, so we just blame other people and game designers when we were fucking morons, too. And we were morons because even though we might have known the truth, we cared more about our own progress than the truth.

I said we, the community at large were idiots. I didn't recuse myself from the stupidity. When I first started playing, I, like everyone else, read forums, talked to people in game, and acted on that information. As time went by, I, and others, learned that we were wrong. But that doesn't mean that it wasn't any less difficult for those people who were doing things that were unconventional.

SE were there the entire time. They watched all of this go down. They have years of data and responses from players available to them. They know that many of their players will look at base stats and say "X is best at Y, and anyone who isn't X shouldn't even be Y, because otherwise they are doing it wrong." If this were a game where you had a number of different characters scattered across a dozen servers, that wouldn't be as big of an issue, but this is Final Fucking Fantasy, where you use one character for everything. And for whatever reason, logic be damned, the morons who play this game and make up the bulk of its community are going to focus on this stupid issue and make it harder for people just trying to do something the majority isn't. Which is stupid. And could have been avoided.

And it wasn't until later years that you saw more people comfortable with choosing those combinations. But for YEARS before that there were very few people that would tempt fate and those that did learned how ignorance can ruin your fun. It made the game more laborious to play so usually the people that did so had a supportive ls behind them. While I think that player performance trumps race/job combination, there was a huge player base that didn't wait to see if you were a good player. The ignorance rampantly spread via the forums and even the game guide. So I should just ignore a large portion of the people and do my own thing? I did (first dmg dealing nin & then rdm/nin) and it did not make the game fun or easier. I was also an officer in several endgame shells and know it makes a difference throughout the game, especially endgame.

But there's a few major differences people seem to be ignoring. Stat growth is no longer linear or static, it's completely customizable and shows clear signs of decreasing values with higher increases. Job combination or even straight up roles are not set in stone and there's a much higher insistence on solo/small group play then when FFXI first started, dramatically lowering the need to "conform or gtfo". Every race has two different choices for base stat distribution where one is more geared for melee while the other is pushed towards magic, so even if you did want to be a melee Taru or a Caster Galka, you have a choice to start as a character strong towards a certain role.

And most important of all, at this time, at this very moment, we already have in place an infrastructure and environment where any and all mathematical or statistical mysteries will be excessively scrutinized and heavily examined. With XI people just went along with "what is" until others started experimenting and exploring and figuring out why. With XIV much of those same people are starting this game from the very beginning and will be there to show just how stupid people can be and point players in the right direction. For as much hate as it gets, BG really is good at breaking down and discovering the secrets of the FFXI game world much faster then anyone else can or does, including the JPs and there's going to be plenty of them in XIV as well.

Stupid people will always exist, en mass, especially in online games. Even if the races did have the same stats, people would still claim one race was better then another at certain jobs, based on nothing more then pure and simple looks.

Yes, but in that case you could easily point out that all racial stats are the same. Whereas in this instance, you'll have to say "Well, I know my base STR isn't as high as X, but the minor difference isn't important," and they've already tuned you out by that point, because: morons.

Admittedly, I don't think it's going to be nearly as bad as FFXI was in that regard (or at least I'd like to hope), but it's still likely going to be an issue for some, and that sucks.

But again, we don't even know if Min/Maxing will be the way to go. With a time limit on stat allocation, combined with the ability to swap classes at any time and the ability to actually gain support stats that oppose your class (i.e. melees can set abilities that grant mage stats without losing out on melee stat options) for all we know a 'balanced build' will be the way to go.

My only point is people are making a big deal over a non-issue that no one really knows whether it will actually matter or not.

The people starting at/near release won't have to worry as much, but as soon as the number crunchers get done doing their job, then the shit will start. I, for one, am not looking forward to it.

That's why I'm waiting for the PS3 release, if I play at all (and it's seeming less and less likely - I enjoy my trim waist and busy social calendar too much these days). At least by then I'll have a general idea of what to avoid if I want to keep from diving head first into stupidity.

Maybe this time around, since, for the most part, we're all going to be more seasoned and experienced with this situation of stat+job+race = performs best at certain job, we can refute alot of the bulls#!7 that noob people try to argue about and just not put up with it. I mean, what's the worst thing someone can do? Throw you out of a party?

If that happens, did you really want to be in it anyway with a bunch of weenies? I mean, I didn't touch beta, but reading and hearing from people sounds like we can solo a little better now. So, while we're waiting for a party invite, we can go whack something or work on a guild level.

This time around, let's just cut through the bull$#!7 and not put up with the whole idea of the ignorant herd mentality thing. Let's stick to our guns. We all know the basics of what it takes to make a good party. Sure, FF14 will be alot different, but surely the primary idea of a tank a healer and some DD won't change too too much.

I dunno; the more I get older, the more I'm just kinda done with putting up with pplz BS and just "tellin em like it is" lol.

How can you have a perfect set up if you have to switch between Melee and Mage in a single fight?

There will be min/maxers, there always are. But even in XI, constant and singular stacking of a specific stat is a bad thing. Higher stats offer lesser returns, some even come in tiers so often times a +1 or +2 would be effectively useless. Others have hard caps that once reached no longer give any benefits and other times certain monsters need completely different gear setups and tactics to win. So even in XI there is no one singular 'perfect setup'. It's all situational.

XIV just takes that concept and runs with it as now not only is gear a situational choice that can change mid-event, but so are the very jobs themselves. Optimum and "Highest Stat" could be (and usually are) two very different things. Even with the stats we have now, most "melee" tribes have either High Str or High Dex, both of which are needed for meleeing. So while a Taru may have to put an extra few points into Str, a Galka will need to boost his Dex. The same patterns are seen in magic stats as well.

Again, this issue just isn't going to be as big a deal as people here seem to be worried about.

Ya I did this in FFXI, in the beginning, and it got me in a world of shit. Between doing my own thing and standing up for the "little guy", I had to stop playing on that character and start leveling another because those "idiots" made the game unbearable.
