I am just going with my preset stat distribution method for a kitty, you get 6 points per level, I will distribut them like this each time...

    DEX 3 points
    STR 2 points
    VIT 1 point

and the same scheme for my elemental depending on what my base element is (based off my guardian) and my weakness
lets say that my guardian is fire based, then I will do it as follows...

    Fire 3 points (my element)
    wind 2 points (my weakness)
ice 1 point (what I dominate)

if my plan turns out to me a bad idea later, I will just spend one day resetting my stats over and over until I get all my points back, and do it the "right way"

The thing i do like about the crazy stat distribution, and full customization of it. Is variety. You won't see the same galdiator twice that is almost a fact. I say almost because some egg head will crack the code that y stat = x increase, and from then on unless you have z in y you will be gimp, and no one wants to be gimp in the eyes of an MMO community. (except me I melee on RDM, I have fun, don't like it pick another of the 200 on server). But i think that it will be an anti-cookie cutter thing. Especially for those people who like to be useful in various roles on the fly. Like a DD who can swap gear quick and become a tank if need be, or a healer. Having equalized stats will have you ready for any role, but of course you will not be as good at those roles as a dedicated person.

I am still trying to figure out if I can casts spells as a gladiator, no luck yet, Id love to be able to cast fire and such and build a real RDM not a quasi RDM that just has balanced stats but has to use extensive macros and gear swap just to be able to perform another role on the fly. Unless I can hold a sword, and have a list of spells available without switching to a wand or staff, I won't be playing FF14.

The only issue I have is that I have to gain so many levels before I can round out my stats, just to be able to consider myself effective in both melee and magic use...

You can cast cure and such while wielding H2H weapons. I can't remember which Rocs Lock video it is, but it shows him casting cure a few time.

I've cast spells as both a Pugilist and a Lancer. No need for a wand or staff apart from while you'll levelling Conjurer and Thaumaturge to get access to those spells.

Just like you set your actions for your job, go to that via your menu. You click the drop down box at the top, choose the job with the ability you need, hope you have enough points to assign it to your bar, if not you remove something, and then you assign it.

Isn't there also some sort of settable traits that boost affinity towards different classes or something? I could've sworn I read about how you can increase the effectiveness of set "sub-class" abilities if your main has a high affinity towards it, which also grants bonus stats to improve the strength of said class affinity.

I think that is actually retail only.

This is incorrect. I'm up to 9 points on leveling up. This gradually increases as you gain more levels. In other words, the difficulty of content a few levels above you are on a curve and that means these tiny starting differences will magically disappear just as I have said all along.

Why did they bother to have the differences then? It's flavor. They wanted to show the distinction between the races and by interjecting their own comments for those RP players (i.e., those who need to draw up a frame of reference for their characters when they engage in RP with each other) This is an RPG people and stats for races have always been just as different as the abilities of classes.

Not sure if I'm on-topic here, but a few things I've noticed about the stats and abilities. O_o

Job abilities, when switched over and used as another job will be weakened; for example, Second Wind, which heals a Pugilist for 200hp or so on a 1 minute recast, heals for 100 on a 1:30 timer when I have it set as a lancer.

As for spells, you can cast, for the most part, any spell you learn as a conjurer or thermata-whatever, as long as it doesn't specifically say that you need to be that job to use it. (Like the skill that restores 50% of your mp)

Stats and stuff you can actually just check the wiki for, like Mind adds 10 mp per point for the mage jobs, and about 3-5 per point for melee jobs.

The elements I haven't really seen much difference in, besides having about 55 lightning attribute, my lightning did hit a bit higher on the Nutbiter Marmots (Hah) that I was killing for well over 3 hours at one point, but not by much.

At level 30 it will make a huge difference as a spell caster and also notice that all job classes have an MP bar which suggests being able to utilize special abilities which may be elemental (Gladiators get a flame TP dump and by putting your elemental points into fire should be able to see additional gains in damage)

The best way to avoid problems with stat distribution is to go to all the various guilds and look at the abilities you can buy with marks. Pick the ones that interest you the most and note any dependancy on an elemental attribute and then put more of your points in that direction. The amount of points awarded with each level gained scales the higher level you are so you'll likely have more points to spend with.

I was trying to find the Lancer's guild with no luck, but I'm really not interested in grinding any more in the beta xD I'll save that for retail.

Some spells, yes, but other spells are "not of affinity" and thus can't be used. Heavy Thrust cannot be used by a Marauder which is a polearm based ability. Yet I can use Skewer just fine. You'll just need to look carefully at the spells and abilities. IT WILL say "Can only be used by X class" or "X Class" which just means the same thing.

Also there are many abilities and spells which can only be obtained by Guild Marks which heavily favors that of the particular class as you get a leg up (obviously) Also, Disciples of Hand/Land are not able to access the stuff that Disciples of War/Magic use and vice versa. You're not able to repair armor unless you're a Hand Armorer as opposed to a War Armorer. There are many hidden restrictions employed throughout the game so ultimately, yes, it is still exceedingly important for you to think about what kind of character you want to roll.
