I think you speak for a decent mount of people. I don't want to be mostly done with my exp limit one day, and be in the groove of grinding away the exp then suddenly hit the wall, and be bummed suddenly that my exp has dropped by a large amount.

There's no need to limit how much fun I can have in a game. I play a game for the fun, not for the limits they place in the game.

well thankfully unlike shooters, points and leveling isn't all mmorpgs have to offer. While that rule is in place, people can adventure and stuff or make more gil somehow, oh ya that's it, while XP may slow down, I don't think Gil will slow down, so that's one of the squillions of other things to do in the meantime.

So ya, they shouldn't have that rule but many will work around it and still make use of their free time.
It will definitely be worth spending 11+ hours a day on FFXIV, even while not leveling! Many will find plenty of reasons to stay and play just as much if not more so than FFXI. And that's a good thing, after all a enjoyable moment is not wasted at all, mew! ^.^

Who gives a shit about having a leg up on the people who get the normal edition. There's always going to be someone better than you anyways.

I'm getting the CE version because I want to play for myself a week earlier. All the swag is cool, too.

Also, I anticipate a slow server for Sept 22... But it will still be better than if one version was released and everybody tryed logging in all at once.

... I just had a thought. What about people who join late in game. Such as 1 year after release? Wouldn't this system screw them over because they can only progress so much?

((Not trying to start an argument, but I was just wondering.))

The bottom line is that it's not as bad as you think it is. Put those neurons towards something more productive, like enlightenment or setting things on fire with only a single thought.

In FFXI, chocobo digging has a limit per day (to discourage RMT) that (if I recall correctly) takes around two years to cap your skill if you do it the maximum amount allowed every day. But that's only a relatively obscure skill that most people don't bother with... unless they've already been doing it that long. Or somehow bot it.

Now imagine how that would limit your progression for a primary skill/job.

My main objection to this is that it punishes "weekenders". If you don't play at all or hardly any during the week, but there's a three day weekend coming up, you can't just go grinding your favorite job, because it punishes you on a per-day (actually less than a day) basis. So those who are able to play for hours every day will still have an advantage, nullifying one of the main arguments in favor of it.

Of course they could do something sane like have the "surplus" points gradually go to whichever job they belong to when you're not leveling it or logged off. But there's still an absolute limit of a minimum time to reach a certain skill level due to this game mechanic, even with no cap on surplus points.

Yes, thats part of the asinine-ness of it. They want everyone to be equal and grow and learn together but what about the PS3'ers in March? They'll be woefully behind! Does this mean they'll implement another asinine restriction so that all of our expz we earn in parties will go to the PS3'ers so they can catch up to us and then it will all go back to the original asinine-ness?

I LOVE grinding for hours on end...and I'm serious. Usually in offline RPG's my people are so buff by the time I hit the end boss that the fight is over in seconds. It helps me tune out the world and my problems. I don't drown it in alcohol, I drown it in fake blood. lol Yep we won't know the true dynamics to this system until SE decides to grant us with a more comprehensive explanation besides a few paragraphs of blather. Oh and HAHAHAHAHAHAHA to all you people that are so happy SE has "changed"...they sure put one over on you for a while.

Yes, grinding at a long day can be nice, especially if you have nothing to do the entire day, but there are those who hate grinding, and still think this system sucks. Depending on the day will depend if I am in the mood to grind for hours on end, or not. It will make the people who don't like to grind need to grind even longer.

I can see this being "good" if they added some sort of reward system. Like your other classes gain the exp that is considered as "surplus" so you don't have to level certain classes (Such as the whole I hate nin thing, but I have to level it and waste tons of money on it to get it to a sub level, and I don't like tanking, and solo takes too long.), to get their skills.

Or give people a second type of currency that can be used to exchange in non game changing items. Such as costumes, or some such.

Or, they can have the surplus gained by the hard core players to give it to the people who barely play (Less than 5 hours a week or so.)

Blanket statements enlarge your own penis. True story.

The "semi" hardcore player would be people smart enough to understand the system, but also smart enough to know when to back off or walk away. Like people with really nice gear that don't do endgame. Or people like Feba that haven't played FFXI in years yet have a better concept of gameplay balance than Malacite ever will.
There is no semi-hardcore. That's just a delusional state people like to put themselves in. I'm not describing the type of player ... I'm describing time spent. Researching and not actually playing the game still counts as activity towards the game. If you spent 5 hours a day researching the game and 2 hours a day playing the game, that's still 7 hours a day to the game.

Yet you're exhibiting all the symptoms of Beta Tester Syndrome.
First of all, I'm not in the beta. Secondly, I've already told you that we're all just basing our opinions on conjecture and yes, this includes those that are in beta. Thirdly, when I say I'm hardcore in how I exhibit my playstyle, I mean to say I play the game and not just use it to stay online for 10 hours a day chatting. I'm efficient meaning that I set aside 2 hours of time for an evening and that I make sure I damn well get as much done in that 2 hours and not dither and blather my time away doing potentially time wasting and pointless activities.

Omg...how dare you play a game the way you want to! Adapt or die!!

Early leg up on crafting = monies.

But I wanna second what Aky-chan said. XI was my first real MMO (I don't count iRO lol) and it was such a different experience and engaging and all my friends were on it etc etc... yeah, I just don't see the level of immersion I had in XI happening again in XIV.

That doesn't mean however, that SE has the right to just go ahead and arbitrarily fuck with the time I can spend doing any one activity in game. Go to hell Komoto, if I'm having fun then let me have my fun, that's why I'm paying for this game in the first place.

EDIT: Shit TGM beat me to it. SE has to realize that this system is going to bite PS3 users in the ass, royally. 6 months delayed release, and then they also have to put up with staggered progress? Yeah that's gonna be loads of fun for friends trying to help newbies catch up with them so they can play together.

FOR THE LOVE OF CRAP JUST BRING BACK LEVEL SYNCH! Problem solved, geez.

I bet they scrap it for PS3, or at least wildly alter it. My guess is most of their playerbase in JP are going to be PS3 players, and they dont want people (read: NA PC players) to have a huge 6 month jump on them. Like JP had on NA with their, what, year and a half lead and complete dictatorship of the economy?

What do you mean? All sources say it punishes you on a weekly basis.

As for me, I'm not gonna get my panties in a bunch 'til I see real data on how much EXP you can get at full rate, the rate of decay, and the regen rate when not in combat. Sure, it's asinine in principle, but if it doesn't affect you much in practice, it's not worth getting up in arms over it.
