Though I'm pretty sure we'll see people trying to recreate FFXI jobs, I tried making a PLD myself and I have to say it worked very well.

GLD with Haymaker, Phalanx, Second wind, Bloodbath, w/e it was called dread spikes for lancer, a few WSs and buffs like Defender and Rampart and then Cure (did 68 every time) and stoneskin, and had a Ghetto PLD/RDM.

Though some abilities like Second wind and Bloodbath will totally be cookie cutter and you'll be expected to have it.
This is one of my major gripes with the game. What are you going to do? Level all combat jobs simultaneously? There is no way people are going to bother with that and as a result we'll have a lot of whine about people missing important abilities. To be an "optimal" Gladiator you need a ton of abilities from many classes and we haven't even seen the L30+ abilities, so we don't know how far that extends. Marauder gets you Defender and Bloodbath, Pugilist gets you Second Wind and Haymaker (though I found that one to be pretty bad) and Thaumaturge gets you the completely overpowered Punishing Barbs and I'm not sure if the spikes Thaums get stun but the Conjurer Shock Spikes sure do, so you'll probably want that, too. There is just so much shit you need to have it's like having to level every job for sub in FFXI.

Another feature that completely dumbfounds me is the physical level/class rank split. You know how in FFXI when you switched to a low level job you were actually pretty much equal with other people at similar levels? Well, in FFXIV your physical level will be so high people leveling their first jobs will be crappy little weaklings compared to you even if their class ranks are equal. Group formation for any kind of exp/skill up purposes is going to be a nightmare.

I agree with the 1st part completely, but after some testing I noticed that even though my physical level was 15+ over the other members in my rank 4-6 party our numbers were pretty close, I didn't look at the HP bar to see if the HP changed but I will in PH3 but so far Physical level seems pretty pointless and attributes don't seem to make any noticeable difference.

I'll look into it in phase 3.

Physical levels make a huge difference. Could you solo red con mobs at R1 with ease? I could, once my physical level was ~20. On R1 my pugilist with a R1 weapon could deal ~60 damage in one attack round against red con mobs. That is absurd for a R1 character. And what if stat points didn't matter? Why would we even have them if that were the case?

Some guy actually did some pretty extensive tests with stat points and found that pumping STR from 15 to something like 80-100 (I cant remember the exact numbers, you can find these on Bluegartr) increased his attack power on a R9 lancer by ~100%. INT made a much smaller difference and a similar change increased his conjurer nukes by only ~10%, but he could boost his damage slightly further by adding points to the corresponding elemental resistance (probably should be Elemental Affinity instead).

That could be because Conjurer doesn't have access to higher tier spells yet? Even with mad stats, basic spells won't go very far. We know that there is Fire 1~4 again for example as it was found in the .dats

Hm, I did try to evenly distribute my stats except for VIT, so maybe I just didn't have them focused enough to make a difference but I'm pretty sure even at level 19 my rank 7 Marauder couldn't beat a yellow Dodo.

Test is tomorrow I'll try again.

My birthday is actually September 22, so... I'll go into work on the Wednesday and book the rest of the week off. Gives me time to party / play.

              Fun week, that will be.

Why spread them evenly unless you plan to multi-class a lot? IIRC, you can respec as much as you want (at least in the beta) so may as well go all-in for any given classes relevant stats?

You can't respec as much as you want, actually. It's on a timer, though nobody seems to be fully certain how it works. In any case, you only get to re-allocate some of your stats and then again some more after several hours have passed. The system is actually a lot more limiting than the FFXI mog house switch. I honestly have no idea what SE was thinking when they came up with it. My guess is they probably weren't thinking at all and simply shot from the hip since they wanted to do something different from FFXI.

not limiting at all, I can mix and match all kinds of abilities from different classes how I want.

Its apparent that stats don't work the same way they do in FFXI.

Beta, so I know I was gonna kill the char anyhow and I was actually playing as many jobs as I can while focusing on gladiator just to test things, this time I think I'll just hoard points til I'm like level 15 then just waste them on something like STR or VIT and then test it on a rank 1 job, just to see.

I'll be playing Demon's Souls. Might as well do something while I wait for PS3 release.

I'm retired. I can play until I drop over from exhaustion. But so far FFXIV hasn't grabbed me like FFXI did so I doubt that I'll be more than a casual player.

                            Come back to XI TGM.

On topic: I'll be waiting a little while.

well this will be refreshing because this is the first FF mmorpg were we can potentially feel more powerful and competent. But I think they should work on making some of the special effects bigger, cooler and better. Of course we have yet to see the advanced skills but ya we'll see.

Is that maybe because the beta for FFXI gave testers the chance to get more invested in their character by being able to play almomst 3 months with no interruptions? The FFXI beta was so memorable, testers couldn't wait to get the retail version. The FFXIV beta so far seems a bit underwhelming.
