Eorzeapedia: Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV, FF14) News, Wiki, Forums, Community and more The 18 Disciplines of Final Fantasy XIV

Posted By Fusionx on July 22, 2010

A small update has arrived to the official Final Fantasy XIV website that brings information about the remaining disciplines that will be available to adventurers when the game launches this September. This is sure to only be the tip of the iceberg however, as the developers have said they have plans to include even more disciplines in future version updates.
Check out each of the announced disciplines on our wiki for more information:

    Disciples of War
    Archer
    Lancer
    Gladiator
    Marauder
    Pugilist

    Disciples of Magic
    Conjurer
    Thaumaturge

    Disciples of the Land
    Botanist
    Fisher
    Miner

    Disciples of the Hand
    Alchemist
    Armorer
    Blacksmith
    Carpenter
    Culinarian
    Goldsmith
    Leatherworker
    Weaver

I can't help but just SQUEEE when I look at all the crafting classes. I absolutely freaking love crafting to death, I hope I can pursue all of them on one character and not be held back like in XI (though I'm also suspicious about needing a 2nd character devoted solely to crafting & gathering and leaving Combat to my main...)

/sigh I'm probably going to spend the bulk of my time on XIV, especially right at launch just fiddling with all the Hand and Land classes to build up my money making potential.

There are Arcanist guild and Musketeer guild present in game already xD Guess SE can't finish those classes in time.

The disproportionate focus on crafting classes is sending up huge red flags for me.

lol notice the formation in the picture. All of the crafting classes are on the front lines.

I find them very fun *shrugs*

I think this time SE wants to really have players help each other.

          Lancer wants bad ass armor
Blacksmith can make armor but needs mats
Miner cant get mats because its a dangerous area

Lancer, Miner, and blacksmith (crafting jobs "subbing" some type of battle class) head out to get said materials

Lancer protects other two, and miner gets mats, blacksmith helps with healing

          Lancer gets armor

          Miner gets extra mats

Blacksmith levels up all around, and gets a little coin for his trouble.

Indeed, another S-E game where making money becomes a second job.

well that sounds good on paper. But the real situations could be harsh and expensive.
Plus why would Blacksmith tag along? What if they are too busy making stuff for other people?
What if Miner is useless in battle or they will need more help to get the farming done? And Miner is behind in leveling
classes that could make it safer and successful?

What if blacksmith messes up the crafting and the ingredients are broken/lost? Who will owe who?

crafting can sure complicate matters, mew. unless they make the actual process not feel like a chore, it sure is strange they would focus more on crafting than war and magic.

lol it would be interesting to see what kind of battle abilities weaver gets. But you know, people can just as easily switch classes anyway. And they already have Musketeer and some other class guild ready, I think more classes will be released maybe within 3 months of launch.

Well things might be kind of interesting but overall, the class selection looks much better than what FFXI started with.

Speculation on my part, but SE is likely to release one last bunch of classes right before launch. Maybe in the last stages of beta testing.

Don't you mean Armorsmith? They are two separate classes. I suppose Blacksmith can probably make some, but it seems more like Blacksmith is just for mostly transforming the raw materials into useable components, which are then further tweaked by the specialized divisions. At least that's likely how it works for more advanced gear.

And good to hear that they are fun, honestly Crafting just went all to hell for me years ago when SE 1st started their war against RMT. I am praying it will be much better this time around as crafting has always been my favorite side hobby in RPGs.

I thought the same at first but how many combat rolls are there to really fill?

While another magic job or two might have been nice I don't think Disciplines of war need to be too overloaded like the melee jobs were in FFXI.

So far you have a hand to hand user, a sword & shield user, a two handed weapon user, a lance user and a bow user. That's most weapons types covered already. Add too many and you just end up with 10x as many melee seeking parties as you do mages, and you know what happens then.

There are still other jobs that can be introduced later but I'd rather see the ones we have so far balanced first then add extra jobs in updates or expansions rather than flooding the game with too many unbalanced jobs at the start then having people bitching about being nerfed when they're balanced later.

Well we already have a basic idea of the 30 or so jobs they'll eventually add to the game, with 12 listed melee and 6 listed mages, there's plenty that will be in this game in the not too distant future.

It's best to add all the crafting classes at the start anyway, if you throw in new crafts mid game it would throw economies out of whack and kind of mess up systems. I'm honestly surprised they didn't include Shepard as one of the starting classes as well, but I guess they wanted to stick with even numbers.

We know there will be a ton of actual classes people will play in time for this game, and while they say that Craft jobs are full fledged classes now, we all know most people won't be bringing them to actual combat instances. They're just something else to level and when you need to fight, you switch to a more combat oriented class.

As has been mentioned, it's better to have all or almost all supporting crafts in at the launch of a game than partway through it as bringing in required item creation methods later on can do most serious economy-busting.

Have you ever been in the military, or part of an organisation that's compartmentalised like the military? Not many people people notice it, but behind the soldiers/officers that are in the combat 'arm' there is a veritable legion of supporting personnel behind them. This also appears to be what they are trying for FFXIV, it's just apparent to most as it's been emphasised.
