I hear that the 470 runs hot so make sure you are on top of cooling too. Sounds like it should run FFXIV to me.

That's an old wives tale.

Mine plays any game on highest settings @64-72c, goes through torture tests around 82c. and thats pretty standard in GPUs.

Only game it suffers with is FFXIV only because its not optimized yet.

It'll be just fine by release, but then again a single 470 is 330$ you can add 70$ and get 2 GTX460 instead, they run cool and when they work together in SLI they get performance up there with the GTX480.

You do know that different people, different setups, get different results right? Two buddies of mine have that card and told me it ran hot because I am considering buying one myself. Sorry if I take 2 peoples advice that I know irl over yours.

I just bought a minifan to help cool my ViDock2. (All it has inside is the fan that comes with the GPU.) It's so loud with an air conditioner, this minifan, and air purifier going in my room. <___<

I feel your pain. My pc is in my bedroom too so I cringe at the thought of adding fans. This summer was a test for it though because it was quite hot here and my bedroom is upstairs. No issues so I'm happy with my setup, unfortunately I am getting a new graphics card so I'm hoping it will still be good enough.

You do know that different people, different setups, get different results right? Two buddies of mine have that card and told me it ran hot because I am considering buying one myself. Sorry if I take 2 peoples advice that I know irl over yours.

The only setup changes that can alter a card's temperature is ventilation, overclocking and room temp.

Mine run at stock, and the case is ventilated enough, and the room is usually 23-32c and I use a fan profile (as should everybody regardless of the card) that goes 1% with the card's temp and get the temps I mentioned.

Its your choice to take someone's advice over another, the card is hot, but its just as hot as cards used to run a few years back (hi ATI 4980) so personally it doesn't bother me that the card game @72c.


Though stick to a 460 or 5850 if 75c is more than you can handle.

Just tried a GTX460 on a C2D 8400/4GB 800mhz/W7 ultimate on beta.

Card was getting decent fps despite Phase3 killing nvidia cards, and it was running 99% load at 51c and fan @50%.
Its amazing, now the 5770 is officially dead to me.

Make sure the fans are at least 80mm though you might want to go with a 120 mm for 1 intake/1 exhaust/both.

Yeah, this is the case I have. The fans are:


1 x 120mm front fan
1 x 120mm rear fan
2 x 120mm top fans, 1 is optional (I think I have both of them running)
1 x 230mm side fan (Admittedly, I'm not sure how this one works since the side only has a giant aluminum pannel)

There are also two large intake vents on the bottom and one in the rear.

Make sure that the hot air is actually being removed. All the fans in the world won't help if they're not pushing the air out of the case, and if the case is itself in hot air.

So just make sure the computer has good ventilation, then? Should be do-able.

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty good with computers, but I always like getting a second(or third, or fourth... tenth? Why not.) opinion.

Looks about in line with what I was planning on building.

But...an i7 recommended? As far as I'm aware there's not a whole lot of difference between the i7 920 and the i5 750, both 2.66GHz quad core processors, the only difference is hyper threading.

What do you guys make of these recommendations?

Recommended, not required. That is what they assume you'll need to get the best visuals and the best performance without having to go overboard (i.e., the average NEW MID-LEVEL PC would be at that range)

As for minimums, I knew that (in fact, I had predicted despite what others have said) that you would need a damn good PC to run this game. Look at SC2 ... a lot of players who were running the beta version just fine can't run the retail release. They forget that many of the options and settings were purposely undertuned for beta in other to mainly test the online stability. Same goes for the SE benchmark client and the beta client. Believe it or not, it's undertuned and does not display the true depth and breadth of the game. I won't be surprised to find stories at release from people who were playing the beta just fine and all of a sudden are being forced to reduce their settings or upgrade because it will no longer run properly on their systems. It's been like this for any game of this caliber and production.

I don't know if you know this ... but all of the current GPUs will run hot. That's just the nature of computing technology. As more transistors are being crammed into an ever shrinking chip wafer, they draw more power and that generates a lot of heat. Right now, even the best cooling options are going to run into problems and this is the main reason why you don't see very many GHz clocked on stock GPUs without exotic cooling techniques.

Hopefully probabilistic processing (DARPA is working on it atm) will help to offload the amount these processors will have to take and we'll be able to live with less transistors on a more energy efficient package and have less overheating problems.

As for your comment regarding 2 people's anecdotes, I agree to a degree that the people around you that you trust may have something valuable to assist with you in purchasing a product, but you also have to take it with a grain of salt. Sometimes it could be that they did something wrong or are not really experts in the particular product and may just offer you nothing more than their opinion. Best way to do this? Research. The truth never comes easy.

Jesus Christ....

I don't know Neomages level of knowledge with pc tech and he was talking about tech that is known to run hot and replacing that part in his pc. I warned him that COMPARED TO WHAT HE HAS NOW that piece could need extra cooling because I don't know what he has for cooling. I have heard so many times on tech boards I frequent that average Joe Blow decides to swap parts and doesn't have the power, room, cooling, whatthefuckever and fries something or etc. So I gave him some solid advice, is that such a bad thing? And yes I do know quite a bit, I've been building longer than most folks on these forums.

The whole debate on wither the GTX470 is made out of lava is old and no longer interesting, I live in Saudi Arabia, for the past few weeks its been 50-60 degrees outside so the average room temp was in the 30s.

If anybody needed to know how hot the GTX470 is, its me and I was torn between that and the 5850, the card runs at 65-77 when gaming, 80-85 on 100% load with a fan profile. (the huge gap in temps is thanks to the A/C)
My old ATI 4890 ran 85c under-load and it served me well for years and I had no issues with it so from my point of view the GTX470 is nothing new, not to mention that its roughly 10c over the 5870 I had in my possession at that time.

Anybody with a high end PC won't have issues with the card, since they'll already have a proper case with proper cooling on hand, but for budget builders the GTX460 is what I recommend. (yep I'm I really like the 460)
