      Re: Recommended System Specs

I'm going to say no. I say that because we've tested a few different cards that were mid range and had very choppy results. That card is a low range so, even though it might run it, I don't think it would be very enjoyable.

Any suggestions on card I could upgrade to? It is an HP slimline tower, so I think my options are limited.

          Re: Recommended System Specs

Is it a pre-fab pc? If so, what's the model number? If not, what are the system specs?

Have to head out to the State Fair and meet up with some FFXI buddies but I'll answer as soon as I can...or someone else can jump in too.

            Re: Recommended System Specs

Yeah, it's a pre-assembled machine. My wife and her aunt bought it for me while I was deployed. I can't complain too much because her aunt payed for half of it. I really didn't want a slimline though.

Anyway, here is my comp. Any help is appreciated.

Edit: The card sits in a PCI Express X 16 slot.

@Cotners Thats a pretty decent PC, Phenom II x4 and 8GB ram, you can get either the recommended and current standard, world champion, conqueror of Shambala etc etc. GTX460 for 200$

or go lower and get that ugly dumpster baby HD5770. for 150$

you\ll get what you pay for with either of them (can you guess which one I recommend?)

You need to remember the beta is quite modular. Even though it is choppy now, doesn't mean it's going to be for release.

                Just saying.

Measure the case and see if there's room for full size/half size cards.

There won't be. The card will fit yes, but he will need to special order a new power supply. That'll run him about $100-$150 for the power supply alone. I looked into it when I thought about upgrading my Acer Aspire x1700. I just bought a new rig cuz the aspire ran benchmark on low res at a score of 30.

                      Re: Recommended System Specs

By the by, my 2-year-old PC runs FFXIV reasonably in 1280x720 windowed, and it's only packing a dual core E6750 @ 2.66Ghz, 4GB of DDR2 and an 8600 GTS. Frame rate drops heavily if I try to run it full screen at 1050p native res on my monitor, though.

The big head-scratcher for me is how much of a memory hog FFXIV is. Huuuge memory footprint, and while it doesn't actually use 4GB of RAM, it's not for a lack of trying.

This is interesting information. I always felt like FFXI was a processor hog (upgrading graphics card didn't seem to do much). I wonder if SE writes inefficient code, or if they just put a lot more stuff in that other notable MMO's don't?

Do you by chance know the dimensions on full and half size cards?

longest card I think is 13 inches. (ati 5970)

                            gtx460 is 8.25 so 9 is good.

so I guess 9-10 is enough.

must cards are as long as your motherboard is wide (standard/micro ATX)

type the card's name in newegg and look in specs and the length will be there.

If the PCIe cables go into the end of the card it might be a good idea to add a little extra on to that. Some cards take them in the side which makes things a little easier.

So, I ran the official FFXIV benchmark on my PC yesterday and it failed miserably. My computer is far from a piece of crap and I got a 566 out of a possible 8000+. I forsee the high requirements of this game turning off a lot of casual gamers who don't want to have to buy a new computer just to run it.
