Looks about in line with what I was planning on building.

But...an i7 recommended? As far as I'm aware there's not a whole lot of difference between the i7 920 and the i5 750, both 2.66GHz quad core processors, the only difference is hyper threading.

What do you guys make of these recommendations?

It looks like they're just picking the most expensive parts available right now. Looks like bullshit to me, or possibly covering their asses so when someone complains about performance they can just point out that while you might be above minimum specs, you aren't at recommended and so what do you expect.

You don't need an i7 to run XIV.

i5 and ATI 5770 would likely be enough. OC for greater performance.

64bit Win 7
i7 @ 2.8ghz
4gb Ram
ATI HD 5700

and it runs decent. I'm at the minimum for their requirements it seems. I've left settings at max and I may be buying a new video card because I'm not too excited about the performance so far. I just built this in February and didn't think of building it around a game. lol

At what resolution? I have a similar set up and wondering what FPS you're getting?

Maybe in a year or so when I need to get a new PC altogether, but in the mean time F that...


I better not need anything beyond a new graphic card, and I'm leaning on the GTS 250 unless the GTX 260 comes down in price. Otherwise I have 4 (supposed to be 8 though...) GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 @2.66 GHz 2.67 GHz, Vista Home Premium SP2.

running game at max settings (but shadows are set to normal) and at 1440x900

I looked around at futureshop a while back and the price of the GTX 260 is double the GTS 250... WTF is that nonsense about? It's not even that huge of an upgrade compared to the 400 series...

I'm planning on getting another PC next year or the year after, provided I ever find a freaking job and save up some money but in the mean time I just want to be able to enjoy 14 in decent-high graphics. Not looking for super lightning fast epic E-peen, just enough that it looks as good or slightly better than it would on my PS3 (for now)

Well at my specs, posted above at max settings, it plays decent but remember this is not retail. For retail my specs would play this game horribly. My son gets about 10 fps with his and his computer is a step down from mine. (He's not home to ask specifically what he has in his and I''m not going to check because crossing he threshold to his room means torture and death!)

I'm going to try upgrading my graphics card and maybe a bit more ram, but thats it....if I can even swing that. Probably have to dip into the Christmas money to do it too...McDonalds gift certificates for everyone this year!! lolololol

I am a senior custom PC and Network builder and analyst at my company and I recently started building a new computer in anticipation of FF14. Since it will be one of the most visual demanding games out on the market this year the first thing you need to do is look at the Crystal Tools Game Engine. This way you can custom tailor a PC for the future, because if you are like me I plan to be on this game for awhile. The one thing I hate is when DLC content or Expansions come out that are more demanding than the original game and having to upgrade. With that in mind not everyone will be able to afford the best of the best, and truly it is not needed.

Ex: FF14 will use up for four-cores on the processor not six-cores, so best thing you can do is get a very decent quad core processor and not a six-core.

With all the above in mind below is a detailed PC I am in the process of building on a budget. (School Loans are a B***h)
First thing I did was buy the following starting components because I have a PC and will gut it and rebuild it a few pieces at a time.

Motherboard - ASUS Maximus III GENE - Purchased

CPU – Intel Core i5-661 Clarkdale 3.33GHz – Purchased

Ram - Mushkin Enhanced Ridgeback 4GB (2 x 2GB) – Purchased

These 3 items are the most important besides the video card. If you can spend more, great! But this is all you NEED for FF14. These 3 items set me back right at 500 bucks.

Next item is the video card, If there was any time to spend extra or go over budget this is it. Me personally from looking at Crystal tools specifications and capabilities I can safely recommend the GTX 460 (No I am not a Nvidia fan boy I try to get the most bang for my buck every time). Now there are different versions and manufactures. This is a whole topic by itself but from the benchmarks and cooling test I have found MSI and Palit are up there. NOTE- Make sure you get the 1 gig version because it has a 256 bit interface and the 768mb version only has 192 bit interface.

Video card – GeForce 460 - Purchased

Once you have the four items listed it is up to you were to take it from there. Personally I will eventually buy the following:

-4 more gigs of the same ram.

-Another GTX 460 for SLI ( If you do this make sure your PSU can handle it0

- 2x 80 gig SSD hard drives to replace the 2 80 gig 7200 HD's I have running in RAID 0

-New case and Modular PSU for better cable management.

-Lastly I will upgrade from the Dual-core processor above to a quad core.(Reason for this is I am on a budget, If you can afford the quad core out of the gate awesome it is a good investment, but the dual core above is running at 4.2 ghz right now on air cooling and will do fine till I can afford the quad.


Also if anyone needs a custom build PC just IM me and I will help you tailor one to your personal budget. ( Work is slow atm) LOL

Well mind you it took 3 moths to save the money for the first four parts and will take another 2-3 to save for the extra ram and second video card. Its all about the budget and saving and making the sacrifices. In the long run it will take a year or more to finish the total computer.

Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460 or better with VRAM 768MB or more Got 470 which is a major advantage over 460 but still I ran everything on max so, lowering settings with 460 looks reasonable.

Ran everything on max except for shadows on High (not Highest) because of it being a game crashing issue and the game ran super smooth with no stuttering or lag or slow down or anything except when i got the the invisible line between town and field then it stuttered for a second.

Even the crowded dock and the camp site were smooth with no issues.

Pretty sure you can get similar results with an i5 set up which would be like 300$+ cheaper. than recommended set up. (1 less ram stick, x58 boards cost alot more than x55 and the i5 is like 100$ cheaper than i7)

SE are totally blowing this out of proportions.

Oh and I ran everything on Stock speeds, deactivated the CPU/RAM/GPU overclock before I the test and still got awesome results.

Overclock i5 and the 460 a bit and you'll be ok.
