  • Re: Guide: Building a PC to play FFXIV

The build I built listed a few pages back is up and running great with beta on.

Have settings all high at 1920x1080 with buffering at resolution and 2xAA running with no slowdown even in high population areas.
Full shadows and details, draw distance set pretty far out. To all the haters out there on green hard drives and 5770's, seriously.. know your shit before you talk :p

    Have fun building

I do know my shit, I just don't need to wave it around in people's faces. I built my pc and I have a 5770. I play the beta and everything is at max. I have some slight issues with performance but nothing that makes me lose sleep at night. But, I know its a whole new ball of wax once the game goes retail so I'm not fooling myself. If I still want to run the game like I am now during retail, its not going to be as smooth and stress free as I want it. So instead of turning down settings and not enjoying the game the way I want to, I'll be getting a new gpu.

I bet you your next video card that the graphics are *not* going to change, and if they do, only for the better. like the fucking cursor won't be so damn lagged. That's about it bro. gg

        I can't wait to get your 5850

        or 5870 :p

And unlike you, some of us are on budgets when we are building, the help that I've recommended kept within a budget, everyone here has gone overbudget for the peeps needing help.

That *IS* a big part of the build, regardless if you like it or not.

Btw, I believe the word I'm looking for is "Optimization". They aren't going to get any more intense.. If anything, they will make it a lot less bulky, and help it run faster and look just as good on slower cards.

It's the same concept as Crysis --> Crysis Wars.

You recommended a case that would cause overheating and a hard drive nearly half as fast and more expensive than other well-known models. Just throwing that out there, bro. gg.

I believe SE stated that the retail version would be 'lighter' than the beta, do to all the beta processes. So you may want to hold off until you try retail before you go spending more money :3

Lighter? Could you link me to that please? Also, take into account the load of people and the shit they'll be doing on the screen. Open gave you a taste but release is going to be absolutely ridiculous, if the servers can handle it. I'd rather ere on the side of caution, and experience because this isn't by far my first MMO/game, and get a decent card instead of finally getting in the game after all the shit I'm going to have trying to d/l the any updates and put up with the log in server being spammed and probably sitting in a queue only to find that my card can't handle the load unless I play it in "OMG THIS LOOKS TERRIBLE" mode or even worse "OMG I CAN'T PLAY THE GAME LIKE THIS" mode. (Because, please note, in my previous post I said that I want to play it on max. So people don't jump on my ass because you don't. I played 6+ years of FFXI so I want all the bells and whistles to thrill me.)

I want all the bells and whistles, too. I'm not going to have any issues with not having them in any single game for a long time. Fuck yea.

I can't find where I read it, but apparently the retail client will be 'lighter', which I assume would mean run more efficient, which should also effect inventory speeds. I believe whoever said this was at the show mayhaps, or at least translated what was said.

I'm sorry, but I agree with TGM and she is right on the money with this one and OMG the rest of you, have you forgotten about FFXI Beta > Retail? (Unless you weren't there for that, then you're excused)

Beta fine > Retail my video card was not even good enough to load the damn character creation screen. I had to dump my 7500 for a 9600 PRO (Radeons) at that time. No, I'm never making that same mistake twice and upgraded to my current card. And 5770 is old technology based on the older 4770 (Or was it the 4850?) with the same 128-bit memory. That's a 3 year old technology ... not good enough.

If you were concerned about the welfare of their budget, then you would've recommended a 4870 instead. If you don't care about playing DX11 games (all indications seem to support the idea that NO developer is going to put out a major DX11 based title in the next 2-3 years anyway) then the 4870 is better than the 5770. 256 bit memory, $99 and does better than a 5830 in some tests.

Well damn, a 5800 series is what's going to be needed for this game? What about the 5830? I love the 5870, but I don't want people to break the bank...

Curious, what would be the Nvidia equivalent to a 4870?

GTX260 ... but it went up in price, not down. My friend purchased it for $135 last year. LAST YEAR. It's retailing at around $189-$219, depending on who you buy it from. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good card, but considering the fact that a 4870 is $99, I wouldn't buy the 260.

                          @WM

I blame ATI for being greedy. They can afford to bring down the price for the 5830s to around $150 and still make money. However, they want to control the yields and don't want to bin good chips for a lower model and instead are funneling all of them towards the 5870s and up. This dries up availability for the 5830s and 5850s and keep their prices high. In all honesty, I would never get a 5830 ... it's like how the GTX465 was ... too little for too much $$$. 5850s should be around $230 or so for stock (Not the OC editions) and if it were, I'd highly recommend them then.

This spot is currently filled by GTX460 and the GTX470s prices are coming down slowly now. Right now, sad to say, but at mid-range Nvidia is being very aggressive and is the only viable option for under $250. We won't know until November when ATI unleashes the 6000 series to see how the mid-range line ups will shake down. But if you're asking me, "hey, I need a card RIGHT NOW and cannot wait another 2 months," then I cannot morally and consciously recommend a 5830. It's like telling someone to go buy a faulty product with a smile and a wink. Again, I would have no problems telling people to buy it if it were $150 but it's too overpriced and too underteched to recommend. You would be better off with just a 5770 card than a 5830 for what you're spending.

so will a 5770 be enough to run ffxiv comfortably or no?

Depends on your definition of "comfortable."

At 1920 x 1080 with 8x AA, Resolution Buffer, high shadows/textures/weather etc? Not really.

My oc'ed Msi Lightning r5870 lets me display it and I get 50-60fps on 1920X1080 4x AA.

Keep in mind, I'm also using a 30"- 720p tv, not a monitor. That's less demanding graphically, so how will it run on lower settings?
