  • Re: Guide: Building a PC to play FFXIV

Just built this machine specifically with this game in mind. Sold my older rig for cash, but this game is getting close to release, so I made a trip to newegg and preordered it at my local gamestop

Building a microatx form factor with a 5770 in a 16x lane with a 3.2 ghz 955 deneb quad. A classic BE CPU. This will be my 3rd build with a phenom 2. They run pretty smooth.

paired with some high speed ram, a cheap ass dvd combo drive, and a goofy ass microatx case, it should run FFXIV fine on normal resolution to higher resolution. All for around 700. I'm glad I didn't get the 5800 series because it would require a power increase ;3. This case comes with a cheap ass 500.. coming from me.. I know the psu is the most important component, but this machine was built with cheap ass gamer in mind :p

    Gigabyte everything for durability ^_~

radeon make this game amazing, truly.

I never like GTX 460 because this is a DX9 game, making Radeon out perform the nvidia easy.

I am running on 5850. Absolutely gorgeous and zero hiccup/lag.
no lag even when my screen have over 100+ players as well.

Hope you realize that this is mostly CPU and not GFX...

How is that CPU vs GPU ? care to explain in detail? Does it mean i can use my onboard vs card when i OC my 1055T to 4ghz and run as many people in my screen without hiccup? I know there are many GTX 460 lovers here, mind cut me some slacks ? I don't hate nvidia or anything, i just hate those overrate.

under any DX10 or less require game Radeon is truely 100% absolute out run nvidia. Please stop trying to win this argument of "460 kick your 58500" ass and perform like a 400$ card well worth the cash or something Or any games that doesn't run AA.

I am talking base on experiences with bother card under same CPU (well different computer).

P.S i only play this game in 1080, i refuse to play low res. Make sure your argument focus point is set on high res only. If you don't experience any lag using 460 GTX on stock @high res. Congratulation, you have a winner.

I can play 1900x1200 maximized without any lag, and I'm running a 460, but if I alt-tab it crashes, so I stick with 1600x1080 or so in windowed mode.

I guess it is just me, i was lagging like crazy during closed beta in a friend's house using his gtx 460 cyclone.

I was like "no way i am getting 460, i will just pay for a 470" then i release... heck why not just buy a radeon and crossfire since i have PCI-E 16 x2. (we ran the same spec of pc) So our boards doesn't support SLI.

Running both an i5 750 and a XFX 5850 - the game runs great. All the settings are maxed, both in XIV Config, and in the game config.

Your CPU keeps track of all of the information regarding other players, including position, movement and the items they carry on them (when you do a "check" you are accessing that information) The more people on screen, the more information is required to keep track of. GPUs do not keep track of this information. As for 3D information regarding character models and textures, yes GPU will process this, but again, CPU is needed because it has to figure out what model belongs to which character and also varying factors that require real time information, like someone in front of you took off their shirt, that needs to be displayed correctly on your screen.

GPU doesn't get stressed nearly as much as the CPU in a very crowded environment. This has always been the case in any online game. Only thing stressing GPU is texture quality, anti aliasing and additional high end feature that is not required to play the game.

I already have stuff shipping out. I haven't built it yet. Good idea on the GTX460, but this is a x/fire board. Plus I don't trust a pos PSU to pump out the amperage and wattage for a hard hitting card like that. I don't even think this psu has more than one 6pin pci-x connector.. nope, sure doesn't. Thanks for lookin out tho.

This rig will pull tops 300w under full load. That's mainly what I was going for. Too many F'ckin computers in here already and the heat is enough to bare.

Wish I could rebuilt, bit too late now, they already charged at newegg *shakefist*

The only real drawback on the 57xx series is the 128 bit bus. What a F*ckin slap in the face.

Look at it this way, you can do eyefinity now! since you got so many PC = so many monitor i assume. I am planning on a funky setup using my 32' sony bravia in middle and 2 23" Portrait on the side to create a crazy badass eyefinity gaming experiences. Not sure if it works.

                              I built 3 pc's using this case:

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I used to have a Lian Li server tower but, even with wheels, that shit was getting too damn heavy to haul out and do fan cleaning, tweaks, or repairs on! lol

I use a HAF X, you can fit a baby inside that thing, though I have an airbrush compressor at hand so I don't need to move it to clean it out.
