  • Re: Guide: Building a PC to play FFXIV

o.O When the hell did NewEgg put up a CA site? About damn time.

Anyway how do I even know which one to take?

---------- Post added at 09:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------

So will this work well for me?

    Newegg.ca - GIGABYTE GV-N460D5-768I-B GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

At $199.99 plus shipping that's still expensive, but I can't afford to go over that.

America's hat always gets the shaft =/ sorry pal but atleast you now have newegg.ca... well think its been up for a while now but yea lol.

That should be fine I'm personally waiting for this card to go lower!
      Newegg.com - ASUS EAH5850 DIRECTCU/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity

Waiting another month to see if prices/deals occur before i buy it though, hell if theres a good enough deal on a the 5870 I might buy that instead. I have to have a new card before FFXIV so in a month, definitely buying one.
      TaruTaru Paladin for life!

If anyone knows Savanna/Berrykins please get her know I'm really sorry for having to quit without giving back her stuff! Willing to repay somehow in FF14 if she plans to play. =/

the 1 GB is an extra $50, no way not worth it.

This is just a temp solution until I get a job and pick up a new PC.

            SLI GTX460 are fairly powerful.

Oh btw miqo'te bewbs are all the same size regardless of the face you take (thry look B cups) unlike hyur and elz with each face having a different cup size.

It's under features I think, it was shown in one of the character creation videos.

And SLI/Crossfire is nothing but a waste of money.

realy its a watse of money? but what about the m4a79xtd evo mother board, it has the crossfirex capability but isnt that a good mother board for a first build? also it should be able to play ff 14 right?

Getting 2 200$ (total 400$) cards and SLI them to get the performance of a 700$ card =/= waste of money.

Also theres the scenario where in the future your card isn't doing so well with a certain game and you find yourself with 3 options.

Pay for a new card which could be 200+ and that depends on your otherhardware not bottlenecking the new card and crippling its performance which could lead to throwing more money on other new hardware.

Pay a fraction of that to pay for another card and go SLI.

                      Not play.

I usually go SLI with mid range cards and save 100$+ over buying a high end one which can go to other parts of the build or just go back to the wallet.

the GTX460 for example is 190-210$and is great for gaming you can get one now and maybe a year or two from now get a second one which should be cheaper then and once you SLI you'll have power close to an ATI 5970 and thats a 700$ card. thus saving you more 300$ in the end.

Of course this is a personal opinion/style and to each his own. but if you're going with 1 card I'd go with something decent to last a long time like the GTX470 or its bitch the ATI5850 or the current gaming default card the GTX460.

I was just looking into this today, and I agree with what you're saying. Anandtech ran a great article comparing the GTX 460 with other NVIDIA and ATI models (link goes directly to performance charts), including SLI configurations and overclocks. Recommended reading for anyone interested.

I ran 2 cards in a crossfire setup and I went back to one card. If you don't mind tweaking shit and putting up with conflicts, the cards running hot if there isn't decent air flow, psu issues if you didn't think of the power drain, etc. then its for you. (And believe me, the tech forums are loaded with people who've had all/some of these issues. I had a couple of them myself.) If you want to basically plug and play, then its not for you. If you don't mind all the hoo ha that comes with dual cards, then you might like it. Also its not as easy as 2+2=4 when it comes to 2 average cards >/= a higher end card. You only get a % of performance out of the 2nd card, mine ran at about 40%.

Oh absolutely. And, different applications will scale differently. If you look at the charts I linked to, Crysis didn't scale as well as Battleforge and BF:BC2. Who knows how well FFXIV will scale?

True all of that, but SLI capable cards give you the option to get more performance by adding a 2nd card instead of buying a better more expensive card so its pretty much comes to how much you want to pay.

2 GTX460 are 400$ around that price they beat the 5870 by a long shot and also the 470 and even 480. and the new 400 cards in general scale very well. so if you have 400$ and want to go SLI with its ups and down, go for it.

if not then a 470 or 5870 will suffice.

                              ----

People building FFXIV PC either want something to hold them over until PS3 release or just don't have the budget shouldn't bother with SLI/CFX or anything fancy like that.

                              I'm currently testing beta on i7 + GTX470/i5 + GTX260/AMD athlon2 X3 + gts 250 /core2duo 8400 + 5770

The last set up I'll try on next beta but the other 3 ran the game with no real issues, the 470 been running it like a champ at full the i5/260 also had no issues at stock and the 250gts did ok but I'm not sure yet.

I have a GTX460 on the way that I'll test aswell (build for a friend) and we'll see how it'll fare.

But I'm starting to get a good idea on what it takes to run this game comfortably and I'll see if I can write up a build that should be cheap and run the game with respectable results.

Would be nice. The GTX 460 will run me around $260 with the shipping & Tax from newegg.ca, which is still more than I'd like to spend but considering the alternative is the GTS 250 idk...
