Rumor is that Intel is releasing the i5 760 in about a month or so... So perhaps there might be a price drop for the i5 750, which is probably the best bang for buck CPU on the market today. Especially for OC'ing.

      Keep an eye out.

The i5 750 is a better overall CPU than the AMD 965.

Take a look at this chart from www.TomsHardware.com

Gaming CPU Heirarchy Chart : Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: July 2010

You can OC the i5 750 to 3.5Ghz easy, without worrying about temp. And when you do, it begins to mimick and sometimes outperform i7 chips.

            Only for an extra $15.

You can overclock any CPU if you're so inclined, but it's risky and may result in damage to your hardware. Inherently, it's only advantage is the 8MB L3 cache, but that's only 2MB more, and about half a GHz less, so why pay more for less?

So I finally bought my computer for school/14. Wanting to get some feedback on if the PSU is enough for my rig. The 500W req. on the GPU box irked me. I got a 750W Antec PSU for my rig.... Here's the rest of the specs.

                Case: CoolerMaster HAF 922
                CPU: i7-930 2.8ghz (no OC)
                GPU: Gigabyte ATI HD 5870
                RAM: 6GB (3X2gb) G-skill 1333 DDR3
                Mobo: Gigabyte X58 i7-930 compatible
                OS: Win 7 64-bit OEM
HDD: 1TB WD caviar SATA HDD

So, 750W enough power for that rig? Mainly using for CS5 maybe some 14 or 11 when I have free time from projects in school. I plan on having the cs5 open or 14/11 open for long periods of time. Hoping this rig will stay cool enough and have enough power. Also, any tips on a surge bar for this setup. Hooking up to my HDTV 24", going to use the HDMI connection.

                TIA.
Thank you very much to Selphiie for this sig!

Its all good and 750 is more than enough, case is well ventilated and will keep things cool, you're good to go.

I've never done it myself, but from what I understand different CPUs can be safely overclocked more or less; some run cooler than others at factory settings. While you could overclock any CPU, it doesn't mean you'll see the same gains on each one.

Well, I don't mean to be a dick or anything or hamper the conversation. I just need a little bit more than saying this is better than that.

At stock speeds, i5-750 is better in MOST tests. Please see Bench - CPU - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News (Note: In some tests, lower is better).

I'm beginning to wonder if building a PC for FFXIV is a worthwhile endeavor for me. I may just have to wait until March. It's all so damn complicated.

Nah, it really isn't. Expensive, maybe... Depending on how powerful you want it, and if you scour the web for deals. But complicated, no.

This will be the first time I'm building PC from scratch, and the only issue I think I might have is installing the CPU and heatsink correctly.

But on a side note, what is it that you think is complicated? Knowing which parts are right for you? Physically building it?

No its not, and you are honestly not going to need the latest i7 to do it, or latest anything for that matter. My PentiumD and SLI 8600's scored just under 700 on the benchmark, technically not high enough to run the game according to SE but I bet it would still run the game if I could run it in full screen. Not that Im going to find out but whatever.

FFXI benchmark ran on things that the actual game wouldn't, SE doesn't have a good track record for making accurate benchmarks. The odd performance of the benchmark (and epeen) is what is pushing the demand for high (expensive) specs.

Yes, just playing the PS3 version is always going to be simpler, but you probably could use a PC for other things, so its not like a decent machine is really going to go to waste. Of course, if you can't use a decent PC, then the PS3 really is a no brainer.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

A bit of a bonus for me building a better PC. My buddy got me into StarCraft II Beta, and my PC could barely run it.

Now I can actually get SCII and play it, as well.
