So i just got into the FFXIV scene. Can't wait till the game comes out, been playing FFXI since NA release. I'm really hoping there is some straight up PVP though. After jumping around playing some games like WoW and especially Warhammer, I gotta say, PVP will shut all the uppity players mouths closed. The only real downside to FFXI was how arrogant a lot of players were. U know what i mean, after the game had been out for a few years u have the "leet" shells and what not, where every player is pretty much a prick; and the ones that study their parsers at work or are patting themselves on the back b/c they did more damage in a party than the guy that was drunk, half asleep, etc. Even then not by that much. After reading about the system, the whole idea of both hands having actions, and the way that weapon skills and ablities will work, I think the game would be solid for PVP play, adding actual strategy to it, instead of Gear > Gear and mashing a macro key (WoW). The community play is where it's at for sure, but a little pvp will definitly knock ppl off their high horses (the ones that really think they are better than you in RL b/c they build their character better than you). ^^b

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
PvP is in ffxi. Those that are on their high horses, and think tey are better than you because they got better gear and shit, are really worse than you. Because, to really get anything good in game, you need to spend like 10+ hours in game to really get anything that is "the best" to b honest. PvP won't knock people off their high horses as well. Because, games that use gear, and can increase stats, will still make it gear based. Just think of the new system as a "cool down for all skills", rather than each skill has its own cool down. Theres not really much of a difference.

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
I thought the devs said they will not have real pvp in ffxiv. Maybe some kinda sports thing like xi, but not real pvp.
Whatever the case is, you sound butthurt as hell.

I wont go into full detail, already did in another forum ;p but my idea of a Colosseum type PvP was a big hit, even with non PvP people, because it turned PvP into a controlled sport.
prizes, a point system, 1 vs. 1 or party vs. party, player or even GM ran tournaments, where all parts of the discussion, and people seemed to really like it.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for XI's PVP, gear has very little to do with it. It's all about job abilities and spells, which in the end are fairly imbalanced and work completely different compared to every other aspect of XI's combat and gameplay. Since you can't swap gear, much of the best endgame setups have no place in XI's PVP, and you need to make a completely different build, often focusing on evasion/defense, which would be gimped anywhere else in the game.
As for PVP in XIV, if done right and properly supported by SE, it could be an incredible addition to the game. Going with PVP types similar to other MMOs won't work though, SE needs to make PVP in XIV into full blown mini-game sporting events. Things like the basic Colosseum ideas, or a Ballista like sporting event. Maybe even take it one step further and build actual stadiums in/near towns to compete in where those hardcore PVP players can make static, customized(colors and names) teams and play schedule matches with other teams like an actual sporting event. While basic combat PVP is all well and good, if SE can take the sporting event style of PVP and really support it, giving players more control over the actual gameplay and structure, I'm sure it would be a lot of fun."I have a forebrain, my ability to abstract thoughts allow for all kinds of things" - Red Mage 8-Bit theater

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
PvP is the only reason I played games like WoW, Warhammer, Darkfall, UO, DAoC, etc. FFXI I played mainly because the community (at least in the early days on Ramuh) was amazing. Everyone was nice. Games like WoW and stuff were 90% assholes, in the time I played FFXI I think I blisted 1 person cause he kept asking me for money. Not that PvP influences any of that, I hope that there is atleast SOME form of PvP in XIV, but if there isn't I'm sure I'll find a reason to enjoy the game anyway.Kyomaa-RETIRED-

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
You want PvP to knock people off their high horses ... but PvP comes with its own set of high horses. Besides, either you can or cannot force somebody to PvP. If you can, it can be considered griefing, and if not, all you get is the chance to trash-talk anybody who doesn't care to fight you...

no because the "Colosseum" in WoW sucks, if you want to call that a Colosseum
the idea being thrown around is much more complicated-------------------------------------------------------------------------

In your post you said "prizes, a point system, 1 vs. 1 or party vs. party, player or even GM ran tournaments, where all parts of the discussion, and people seemed to really like it. "
WoW doesn't have 1v1, because it'd be way too hard to balance that. It has Party v Party, has GM ran tournaments (with prizes up to $75,000), points and prizes.
Just because you suck at WoW, doesn't mean you should bash it.Kyomaa-RETIRED-

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
I'm just not hardcore enough to enjoy arena. I like winning, but at the same time, I don't want to put in the effort to be awesome lol. Thats why I play HoN. Personal problem, I know, but Arena style pvp is just not for me.
And Kaliea is just hating again for no reason. Typical.Burning questions are burning: Is jenova_9 really a girl and is she cute? Does she talk like that in real life?

and no, the idea of the FFXIV Colosseum is not the same as WoW's For one since SE does not like the PvP idea in general, no endgame gear or any gear (that matters) would be gained from this, is all for entertainment and player sparing, in a tournament style fashion. People could sit in the stand and watch (but not interfere) with the fights going on, and could even place bets on who would win (this idea was kind of iffy). The general idea of the concept, was to bring PvP in the game, give it meaning, but not make "non-PvP" players feel like they have to participate in it to get powerful items.[COLOR="Silver"]Last edited by Kailea; 04-23-2010, 10:52 AM.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Mechanics would be great for pvp
I';d love to see some type of Arena PvP in FFXIV. I loved PvP in WoW.
Despite how easy WoW is, playing against other live thinking beings is different and does add more difficulty. That's probably why I enjoyed it so much was cause PvP was the only thing that actually posed a challenge.
Well being able to change the dungeon difficulty made it harder too.. I forgot about that.A mans strength isn't measured by the size of his muscle, but by the size of his heart.
