    Re: Luck?

The thing about getting fame for quests is, if you put in the hard work you are garanteed it. That's not what I'm getting at. There are a lot of things in FFXI where you put in the hard work and you MIGHT have a chance at getting an item.

    Here's an example:

"Well done player, you have put in hard work and developed your skills, have a reward!" - This is typical game design fundamentals.

    or

"So you've put in hard work and developed your skills I see. Well, I don't feel like giving you anything, so bad luck, seeya" - This is typical FFXI game design which doesn't cut it in today's industry. If I grind and grind for hours to farm an item only to have it be "fake" when I hand it into an NPC and he tells me to find another one, that is bad game design.

"... and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."

Thats also the same with other games out in the market. You sit there and kill the same thing over and over for hours on end for one item, and you never get it. Then, some random player runs in, kills one monster and get the drop.

Most drop rates are based purely on luck, which is not how it should be. The more you kill something, the better chance you should get to get the drop. Its a game FFS, let us get the items we are after rather than give us a "chance" to get the item.

        Re: Luck?

Luck, imHo, is much more than just another stat like agility, dexterity, strength, intelligence, etc. It's hard to quantify. I'd hope the Fates, as it were, affected a character all around rather than in just one or two aspects. I'd also hope that just as with a high luck stat that makes things awesome, SE would make a low luck stat affect the player adversely.

OFF/on topic... sometimes I wonder if there's something in FFxi that gives people better "luck" with /random... specially when you see one person out-lot 15-30 others on 5/10 campaign spoils... is there a GD furnishing or something for making /randoms {Impossible to Guage} ... my /randoms suck dog butt.

... I mean, I help old ladies cross the damn streets... Karma can't hate me that much... can it? Nevermind... it totally can.

Punting them from one corner to the other really doesn't count. I mean, you may, on some level, consider that to be helping, but most would probably consider it downright dastardly.

The first thing that comes to mind regarding quests of that infamous design is In a Pickle - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more, otherwise known as the "Smooth Stone" quest or the "Screw you with a Pitchfork, Chamama!" quest, and for very good reasons.

                  ROFLMAO

I remember this wonderful quest. Back when you're a beginnner this did seem like such a beating. Later in my "career" (damn job references for this game keep coming up) When I needed to level a job to 15 before heading to the Doomes I spent a lot of time in West Sarutabaruta because the mobs there had some decent drops, especially the crawlers. So I ran across quite a few smooth stones in my time and would trade them in for the "chance" of a little more gil. But trying to get that first one ...?

There's also the new quest to get the key item to fight Odin Prime. I'm sure there's many other examples that I can't think off the top of my head. But someone else added something good about drop rates, which is probably the main reason for major end-game drama.

Not sure if you'd call it a quest, but the ??? items appraisal guy is pretty luck based and seriously one annoying son of a bitch. And there are some pretty nice things to be had from those, if you don't get overrun by Gorgets and Silver Obis. -.-

Nice one- I forgot about that quest.

However Omecle mentioned farming for hours to get a fake item. Anyone who farmed smooth stones for hours had their priorities all wrong lol.

How about spending months in Salvage with no sign of an Ares body 35 dropping, on top of that when it does drop you're paying 14M or so to turn it into an Ares body...

I really did hate how much of a cockblock salvage pieces were, first with their drop rates (some 35s I never saw once in six months of doing Salvage every day) and then with the extreme prices. They didn't want them to be common? -.- The shitty drop rates took care of that, trust me.
