    The two same names are impossible, but having the same first name or last name as someone is possible.

          I was told it's optional. It's not in Alpha though I guess.

            All I can remember is that when FFXI had its beta (and even more so during the NA launch) you couldn't take three steps in any starting city without seeing "xCloudStrifex" or "Seffireth" or "Yunielesca". It didn't seem to matter to them that they'd get constantly confused with people like "CloudStriife" or "Seiferoth" or "LadyYuuna" or someone else...

            I'm expecting the same sort of rampant idiocy to happen in FFXIV as well. Fortunately, most such brain-dead players tend not to stick around, so the actual amount of such player names you see in FFXI these days is relatively low - but for the first year or so of FFXIV? Yeah.
