Alpha Manual details uncovered! Gameinformer has the secrets!
I thought NDA only applies to those who signed them. Testers aren't allowed to leak informations. But when they're leak, we non-testers can rejoice and post them.
There's some legal mumbo jumbo where SE can cause a lot of problems for anyone who goes around openly hosting information that's supposed to be private (like the GM manuals or the Alpha Manual). While they can't stop everyone from sharing the info, they can go to the major sites and cause trouble for them if they have material of this nature posted and the site refuses to remove it. I mean, for basic things SE won't really cause problems (BG is openly discussing stuff about the Beta with no recourse), but directly reposting the Alpha Manual will (and has) get SE's attention.
That's not exactly what the article says. It says you have both physical levels and skill levels, which seems to imply that unlike XI you do have a main character level to go alongside your associated skills, all of which cap at 20. It could also be we have class levels + skill levels, though the article wasn't that specific. We'll know soon enough as the beta begins in 2 days.
No no, it's just two different types of 'Levels'. Physical Level and Skill Rank seem to be the official terms. Physical level is what level your character is and Skill Rank determines how well you're able to wield weapons and tools, which in turn is what determines your class. From the actual description, Skill Rank = Class level, the higher your skill rank with a specific Weapon or Tool, the more Abilities and Weapon Skills you learn for that class. Character Level is only increased through killing monsters (currently the only way to gain Exp) while Skill Rank can be increased through Killing Monsters or Crafting/Mining.
There also seems to be a stat point allotment system (i.e. merits) in place as well, allowing you some customization over your characters statistical growth. However very little info about it was mentioned, and the only thing we know for sure is that in the Alpha, all allotted stats are irreversible.

I hate when games do this kind of BS. I just hope they are reversible. Mainly because I don't want to be paying for a character I can't fix if I accidentally place a point in a stat I don't like. Or wish to be a melee character after being a pure mage for a few days.

It's due to it being in the Alpha phase, I'm sure when the thing finally goes live, or hell even gets to the closed beta, we'll be able to rearrange and reverse stat changes.

If you applied for the Alpha &/or Beta you clicked the box that said you agreed to abide by the NDA.
Not saying how I feel on the NDA or how people will either break it or not, just saying if you applied to be a tester you did "sign" it.

Isn't only leveling up once, and supposedly being easier to do it a little too much like WoW? If the level cap in the first year is say 50, once you reach it, all you can do is skill up other classes... what happens if you're level 50 but starting a Gladiator at level 1 skill... how does that affect the exp your party gets if the other players are level 20 with a level 1 skill in their class? So confusing.
