In the other hand I think they made a very interesting move..... so now you can play pure crafter or gatherer that can travel with groups... very interesting
That's what I'm most excited for. I'll probably try out Lancer or Pug, but I think I'm going to spend most of my time being a crafter.

I will be too. I just hope they have some melee skill if any at all. Would hate to be a miner with out knowing how to swing a pick axe at a monster if it attacks you. Or a Black smith that wont use their hammer to defend themselves if attacked.

They've already confirmed Miners will have some sort of abilities to weaken rock type monsters, so it's easy to assume other classes will have use in combat. But I don't see these classes using their highly tuned, finely crafted specialty tools as weapons. They'll probably have very limited, if any, actual combat abilities. Just like you don't chop wood with a battle axe, you don't do battle with a log cutting hatchet.

It was honestly one of the most enjoyable...and annoying...parts of playing Thf. Having to move and find the best openings to use your attacks and abilities kept the job that much more interesting then other basic melee jobs. On War all I need to do is hit /assist <t>, /a then WS at 100 with random JAs in between. But Thf was always moving and positioning to get the best angle of attack. While at times this may suck (narrow tunnels, uneven ground, any time pre-60), it helped make the job more active and interesting. With the new classes and abilities, it seems not just position, but timing, will be important in combat conditions and abilities, which will make the basic auto-attack combat system far more interactive.

Why not compare to XI? At least it's the same genre of game and by the same company no less. They've already said they are going to take the lessons learned from XI and apply them to XIV, which only makes it all the more appropriate.

Besides comparing things is part of human nature and has a huge impact on our decisions. I read an amazing book on human psychology once that talked about this and soon as I remember the title I'll edit this post >.>

Anyway, seems Balfree hasn't been paying attention to the recent string of updates. You can't rest for MP in XIV. Some classes will learn ways to conserve or even recover it, but beyond that you have to manage it very carefully. Touching an Aetheryte crystal will refill your HP & MP to full, and I'm assuming there are items/food to recover it as well, but it still seems like a major step backward in the face of all the awesomeness.

I have not gotten the impression that any of the Disciplines of the Land/Hand will have the ability to hit mobs with a weapon.

mmm that might explain why SE said "normal parties will consist of 6-8 people"

maybe 6 fighters and 2 crafters would be a normal setup?

Well, Blacksmiths probably won't be on hand during normal parties but I can definitely see them being brought to HNMs to keep the front line jobs' equipment in shape for the fight.

Because, it is something that is completely different. The battle system will be different, the game play will be different, the party set ups, the tanking, the damage dealing, the healing, EVERYTHING.

Even crafters are their stand alone class in the game. They actually have a part to do in parties now more than they used to.

That's a pretty ignorant statement right there. Yes, the battles will be different but not that different. Various elements are being changed and fights will be more strategic, but the core principals remain the same as an RPG. It's still turn-based combat with a menu system with an emphasis on team work. And it's not like these classes are all 100% original, not recycling things that worked in XI either.

It may be an inconvenience... But anything to make alchemist more relavent to the game is good. What could probably end up happening is that a PT brings along an Alchemist, and he starts making pots from some of the drops the PT is killing on that run.

XD ditto. And I don't mind Alchemy being made more relevant as long as the costs can be kept to a minimum... It still bothers the hell out of me though, that XIII threw MP out the window only to have it come right back in our faces in the traditional offline style. orz

.... yeah I have to begrudgingly admit I 13, I really do. Not the best in the series, but far better than I'd expected. It'll learn me not to listen to moronic importers who can't even read Japanese ever again. Invisible Walls is usually pretty solid but they (and many others) dropped the ball when it came to the original "details" on 13.
