Alpha testing come first, and that has not even started yet, then closed beta, then open beta

Yeah, I think the alpha just started. NDAs at this stage usually are very strict, and alpha testers are very, very rarely selected from a userbase. Rather, this is the stage were companies employ official testers to work out the problems in their inevitably bug-ridden game. If information was leaked, and the company found out who leaked it, they would probably be fired. Closed Beta usually selects users based on their hardware configuration, to test how the game operates with different hardware specs, program configurations, internet speeds, etc. Open Beta is for stress-testing the servers, to make sure they can handle the traffic. None of these are meant to be a preview of the game mechanics or a free trial.

The most recent interview in one of the Japanese magazines (not Famitsu- Denkei I think it's called) had several Q&A about beta, and the developer they interviewed basically said Alpha will be VERY limited- like almost nothing to do- just testing fundamentals, etc. It's not even really going to be a game so to speak. Once this stage passes, the closed beta will start, and the content available will be less than half of what the final game will have, which makes sense considering how big the retail version will be.

FFXI beta had no Zilart areas or jobs, and level cap 50 I believe. The genkei 1 quest might have been active, but I don't think anyone was able to finish it. Other than that, everything else was available, so I'd say it was about 50% of the total content that came out for retail.

I didn't read the NDA .. but I don't think anything will happen if you say you're in beta. Leaking beta pics, info, etc.. is different.

I had to sign an NDA for a VO for Doom 4. I can say there will be a Doom 4, I can say what I did, and a few other details.. But as far as story, characters etc.. I can't/

Actually no, if SE finds out you told anyone they can ban you on the spot. During the vanafest live feed, one of the guys form PFA talked about how he's been a beta tester before and he made a very good point;

You honestly don't want to tell people you're in it. Reason being that before you know you'll have people hounding you every second for info and it's not pleasant. They'll probably lighten up a bit once the open Beta begins since by that point the game will be in it's final or near-final version and not much is going to change. At that point they're just stress testing the servers and making last second changes if anything is deemed drastically unbalanced or fixing glitches etc.

I just don't see SE putting the time and energy into scouring the forums for people saying they're in alpha or beta. If a screenshot is leaked, that's different. They can get the word, find the source, then figure out from there what to do.

But mentioning then banning seems stupid. I could be in alpha right now, and tell people verbally on PSN, the phone, and in person.. Get what I am saying?

If I'm not mistaken TGM agreed with what you said, and cited is as a reason she would choose not to tell anyone she was in Alpha/Beta.
