Re: Final Fantasy XIV a Serious WoW Rival, says Wada

I really don't think they're going to the effort of making these crafting jobs real professions just to kick them all in the nuts right after.

SE's going to continue with the trends they started the last couple of years with FFXI. In game items for the purchase of real items and those in-game items will be pretty trivial stuff, possibly incentives for getting expansions. They might even do the Aeria points thing and try to sell some starter packs of EXP bonuses, special consuable items or things like that. Maybe even funky gear.

I mean, really, people are fucking dumb enough to go out and by clothes for the XBL avatars, they'd buy holiday gear in an MMO.

People have been predicting WoW-killers for a long time. I'm sure it's as much a preference as whether you enjoy living in the city or suburbs.

        not a good example.

WoW is more like a restaurant that's always popular, but not everyone likes what they serve. The majority only play it because right now it's the only thing that's "good" for casuals and people who don't want to put as much effort as it takes to get anywhere in FFXI.

FFXIV being more accessible to broader spectrum of players, it definitely has a better chance to reel in interest from mmorpg players and WoW players a like.

Especially considering games in the industry are often compared in graphics,
and FFXIV in graphics alone makes WoW appear so outdated and lifeless.

I typed out a long response to refute your example, but it's not necessary.

True but WOW eventually will die just like every other MMO does. Its a bit annoying how some people seem to get offended when if anyone dare say WOW will eventually be dethroned and not be as popular. It probably will last a long time after it looses popularity. Isn't Lineage still going? WOW may loose players to any MMO but it will probably be around for a while just like FFXI will still be going for awhile even though people here think it will die the day FFVI goes live.

Its the press that labels things "WOW Killers" the developers talk about WOW as competition.

Print: Newspaper lines my bird cage. It's also great for cleaning glass. Print doesn't hurt my eyes to read as much as an LCD monitor (haven't tried e-ink.) I love the smell and feel of a book. I prefer the layout of magazine and newspaper pages to web pages.

Game Disc/Card/Cart: Can be resold, traded, or loaned. Can be sold with pack-ins.

A download-only closed platform would be absolutely terrible for consumers. Not looking forward to it. It also seems less and less likely for the near future due to the bandwidth situation in many places. Eventually... yeah sure, it'll happen, but that could be any length of time from now.

Ya people just need to look at Everquest. It's still going but it's not the top mmorpg anymore.

I'm sure SE knows a good deal of their player base would be disenchanted with the game if in order to be good you have to have a fat RL wallet. Relax and wait a bit for a more elaborate explanation folks!
Everyone is jumping the gun. ANY information about FFXIV, and everyone explodes about it thinking its the best thing ever. Its because they release so little at a time, and they don't give any "real" definitive answers.

Yea. It was just an example. If you could do that though, it would f*ck up the in-game economy though. $10 for 50k gil? They could do it if they wanted, and a lot of people would jump at the chance to actually do it. I have thought about it at times when I needed gear to level, and I wasn't a high enough of a level to farm for the money, or just didn't have the time to atually farm. Or needed a character to 37 ASAP trying to not hold back my LS from an event.

I lost any respect I could have possibly had for this game, and most of my respect for S-E as a whole, upon reading that not only do they intend to bring out the micro-transactions without hesitance, but that they intend to "rival" a game only slightly younger than their own FFXI!

And its going to die anyway, by sacrifice of principles, in a last-ditch effort to survive before it still dies. The government has been looking to bail-out newspapers, something that has caused even some of the most liberal people out there to take a step back and wonder if we really should just let newspaper die and accept that technology has won this round

And let me twll you - I was a journalism major. It saddens me to think about print media dying out, but its going to no matter what happens. Government bailouts won't save why newspapers aren't attractive to advertisers anymore. I'm shifting my focus to web and graphic design so my skills can thrive in the a media where I can be allowed to maintain the ethics I was trained in for newspapers.

Is newspaper worth saving to line your birgcage and clean glass? Is worth saving just because its easier on your eyes? Reading from paper is easy on the eyes, but when it comes to news, you're not reading for several minutes at a time. News pieces are short and sweet, editorials, too. Feature are a bit longer but not that long.

I don't think books will ever die out, but newspapers and magazines? Most certainly.

Game Disc/Card/Cart: Can be resold, traded, or loaned. Can be sold with pack-ins.
These are just monetary/trade benefits. I meant other qualities.

With all the 3G and 4G and wifi technologies out there, you don't think we won't be able to come up with some evolution of these technologies in the next several years to get around the issue of location? We already use radio and TV to reach far locations. What if the internet could be broagcast on a greater scale than what our little wifi routers do and the ISPs were the stations?

I agree, and mentioned those because those are qualities I will miss. Still, there will always be junk mail for the bird cage. For games consoles though, physical media wins in price.

Infrastructure is not really what worries me, policy is. Both wired and wireless need work anyway. Radio has it's own set of problems that will always be around too.
