    Re: Site updated again

The thing that bugs me about the Gladiator is that they made it seem like a person that wants to protect their allies, and fights for the good.

but in reality, Gladiators where actualy criminals...

The trade in gladiators was Empire-wide, and subjected to strict official control. Rome's military success produced an influx of soldier-prisoners who were redistributed for use in State mines or amphitheatres and for sale on the open market.

SE seems to use the title just because it originated from its meaning which is sword.

Thats what I am thinking too. It does mean "swordsman", but the way thet portray them though just seems odd. Makes them seem that they where these great people who fought for their allies, and against evil (but then again, you are doing that in all FF games... lol))

oh well guess it was just bad taste in naming that class.

or maybe they wanted a title that fits both genders.

Because I don't think a woman would be called a swordsman. they would be called a swordswoman, I think, so I guess
there would be a clash between titles, so they came up with a title that can be used for both.

Why not just call it "Fighter", or even "Warrior"? Its still the same thing. Warriors will fight the description better as they fought for their king. Fighters will fight the description of weapons as well.

@Takelli: The Roman gladiators obviously didn't wear knightly armor, so you're taking things way too literally here.

Because gladiators use swords. A person that wields a spear can also be described as a Fighter or a Warrior, but you might as well go with the descriptive name - Lancer.

Yes, I know that they did not. I just think its odd how they decided to chose the name though.

Gladiators did not just use swords. They used Spear+Net, Cestis, Swords, and more.

Yes, but again, these aren't Roman Gladiators. Whatever they used is irrelevant. They're simply borrowing the name and the name implies they use swords, which is what the class actually does. There is no problem.

Keeping in mind, that at least for the western audience, SE is trying to differentiate XI and XIV as much as possible. I believe someone posted that the Lancer in the JP site still basically translate into DRG, but they've renamed it for us on purpose.

I don't totally mind this, especially since the classes are being named according to their defining equipment or play style. I'm not a fan of the term "pugilist" though any way you slice it, though there aren't many (good) alternatives.

But see, Pugilist is a term used for the majority of hand-to-hand fighters since from there it can branch out to more specialized hand-to-hand techniques. Remember that SE wants to give people flexibility with the new classes now, so you could be a Pugilist, but one that can tank, or you could be a Pugilist that focuses on offense.

I'm aware that it's the correct term. I just don't like the word itself lol. I dunno, I guess it just doesn't project as well as "Monk" does.

Yea. Monk does sound better, but it makes me think more ofd a "Shaolin Monk", than a H2H fighter. Shalin Monks used Pole Arms, and Scimitars, and other weapons (Too many to list lol) when they fought. But all the monk in FF does is use H2H weapons. Could use a staff, but they way they do it is just like a mage. When they use a staff, it shoudl be a tri-hit attack tyupe thing.

Where as Pugilist directly means "boxer" who use their Hands and Feet as weapons when fighting and nothing more(Except for Brass Knuckles and so on)
