I could almost see pirate, except for the gaiters with the metal toes, and the head wrap doesn't look quite as piratey.

Not necessarily... a tower shield doesn't need to touch the ground, else how would you move...?

It should be big enough to cover your whole body from missile attacks if you lay low under it, though.

(Despite their FFXI portrayal) kite shields are teardrop-shaped. The type used most often by PLDs in FFXI are heater shields. Also like Balfree said, the scutums used by romans didn't touch the ground; they were simply wide and big enough to hide behind when crouching and and/or make tight formations.

That aside it doesn't look quite like a scutum either, because scutums were curved (like the side of a soda can, just less extreme) and the shield looks a little bit too narrow to fully cover your sides if you tried to hide behind it. But it's hard to judge when it's being held at an angle.
