You mean like the Bodkin Arrow before they changed it? All I'm saying is that a Ranger being able to use "different types of ammo based on the situation" is not a new nor revolutionary concept. It's something we've seen before and wrote off without a second thought. That concept exists in FFXI now, but people don't feel it's anything special and often completely ignore it.

Except its a class, I think that's going to make it rather different. We don't have any class shown at this point that specializes with a knife outside of Culinarian.
Who said Culinarian specializes in knives? For all we know their "weapon" of choice is a frying pan, something that's been featured in just as many pics of them as the cutting knife. It is a different class, yes, but when it comes right down to it, the basic idea of crafting is almost word for word taken from FFXI. It's just that in FFXIV Crafters might have more specialized gear, abilities and ways to gain skill then sitting there crafting for hours on end. Those aspects may be new, but the "knowing the recipe, have the ingredients and also decide what tools are best for the job" part is the same concepts from FFXI.

    Emphasis on "seem."

No Final Fantasy to date has played precisely like the previous ones, so it would be a foolish to assume this was a glossed up version of FFXI. There might be similarities. But they're as much as FF, FFIII, FFV are similar. They all have the job change system, but do they work the same way, have the same jobs and do the same things? FFX-2 and FFXI have job change, too. Are they the same, too? Not really.
And I never said they would play exactly the same, I know there's going to be tons of differences. But there will also be loads of similarities. Far more then any previous FF titles outside of X and X-2. I never said that was a bad thing, I'm just pointing out that the more things change, the more they'll stay the same. Take the ideas from FFXI and make them better, that's how FFXIV seems to be shaping up in my eyes.

I don't know. Not even Akihiko Yoshida can make a frying pan look like a legitimate weapon. It'd look really out of place among the other classes' relatively realistic designs.

Actually, a Cullinarian's "Tool of the Trade" IS a skillet. It says it right in their bio.

Crafter classes don't use weapons in the traditional sense, that's the whole point of the new class system. They use craft supplies. Blacksmith uses a cross-pein hammer. Weaver uses a freaking sewing needle. Hell, Tanner is the class that has a knife associated with it, but it's not a combat knife, it's a crafting knife. And in addition to their "weapons" it also seems each crafting class gets it's own little work station, like the Anvil for smithers and the wheel for weavers.

Yes. That doesn't mean you'll run around smacking things with a skillet. They could have a legit weapon.

But that weapon wouldn't be something it "specialized" in or represented it. Just like Rngs could use knives and Cors can use swords, but the weapons that define them are Bows and Guns.

Of course, that's assuming crafting classes can even fight at all.

              Tell that to Edge

Seriously though I absolutely love what they are doing with the crafting system; it's already sounding far more innovative and fun than anything else I've ever come across. They really meant it when they said they were going to make it so you can enjoy the game solely through crafting.

Frying Pan from Phantasy Star Online....The memories...bring happy tears to mine eyes.

Least it isn't Princess Peach's Frying Pan. (SMRPG Memories...bring happy tears to mine eyes as well.)

Oh yes and I almost forgot, the frying pan was Peach's ultimate weapon in super mario RPG.

And who made that game? Gee, I wonder

Do you see Italian Plumber as a class in FFXIV? No? That's what I thought.

But the fact still remains that a Skillet is the "weapon" of choice for Culinarian as a Spear is the weapon of choice for a Lancer. It's just that crafting classes, and most likely gathering classes, most likely won't have any actual combat abilities.

Didn't they already say that they do, they're just obviously not as good at combat as a combat class?

If a cook is out in the field and a monster aggros him, what the fuck is he supposed to do? Block with a skillet while he runs for his life? You can only change weapons/classes between battles, and surely being aggroed and attacked constitutes as being in a fight.

Whysa you gotta go after the Mario? He'sa done nothing to you.

I wonder how they'll handle bows and guns in terms of degradation. Since they're not really melee weapons, I would figure they degraded through use over time more than from direct damage. Also, if archers are a distinct class and don't use guns, I hope the other class that gets guns gets the choice of pistols, shotguns and rifles. Everything in FFXI was used like a rifle.

Also, I've seen nothing about skillets being a primary weapon for Culinarian, I've only seen talk of Knives.
