well with Lancer being revealed so early, it's time to celebrate. I thought there wasn't gonna be any more new media until the beta.

From the info released so far the Archer appears to be missing any melee weapon, the Lancer presumably is restricted to polearm only.

There could be different types of that weapon. Like in the "pole" types theres... Polearm, Lance, Spear Ect.

Bow weapons: Bow, Crossbow

Sword: 2 handed sword, one handed sword, long sword, Rapier

ECT...

So, a gladiator is some one who uses a "Sword" type of weapon. And their skill sets are based on their weapon they use. Like with a 2 handed sword they get Great Cleave (Hits 2 targets), where as if they equiped a Rapier they get Precise Strike (Next attack is more acurate and has a greater chance of critting).

Or a Lander uses "pole" weapons and if they use a Polearm they get jump, and if they get a Spear they get chuck (Tosses the spear (Recovers it after fight)) and so on.

((Bad example I know, but I hope you get the point...))

That's assuming no two weapons share abilities, which may not be true.

It's also assuming that ALL abilities are weapon based, and never transfer to your character. For example, it means that you'll NEVER learn how to cure while using a sword, no matter how long you use staves. It also would mean that all abilities are ONLY granted from weapons, never from items or non-weapon related skills (i.e. meripo JAs); like I gave the example of, it means that you couldn't get the Jump ability by having a pet in the Dragon-family, or any other ability from a pet.

These are pretty big assumptions to make.

It depends on the equipment system. It could easily be that there is a 'sub-weapon' (note; I don't mean off-hand) like in some other games; your class weapon would go in the main slot. For example, if you put daggers in your main weapon right/left slots, and a bow and arrow in your sub weapon slot, you might be a Rogue or Ranger (not RNG in the FFXI sense); whereas if you put the bow and arrow in your main weapon slots and the daggers in your sub-weapon slots, you'd be an Archer or Sniper or so on.

It's nice that I'm not the only one to notice this.

I would actually like to be able to use a Spear, but not be a Dragoon. When I first started FFXI, I was quite happy when I saw that Paladin was able to use Polearms (Mainly Spears and a few Lances) in an attacking manner... imagine my disappointment when you sucked hairy donkey balls if you actually tried it.

For now, there's just 'Lancer'. Who's to say there will not be other classes based on Spear or Poleaxe? Although I don't think there would be a Pike-based class!

well yeah changes are there will be Knight Swords, separate from 1h Swords, that represents a different class from Gladiators.

And then there's the 2H Swords/Great Swords, not sure what kinda class will wield those.

I'm guessing Dark Knights will wield Scythes. and Great Katanas = Samurai.

well rumors now say the 7 pages include these classes revealed:

Blacksmith -> Crosspane Hammer (seen before)
Chef -> Frying Pan
Weaver -> Needle (we knew of that one)
Leathersmith -> Head Knife
Alchemist -> Alembic

I'm guessing here... you can probably use multiple weapons while on a certain job, you will only switch jobs if you want to... maybe?
