Eorzeapedia: Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV, FF14) News, Wiki, Forums, Community and more GAME Watch Interviews Tanaka and Komoto at TGS
Whoo I beat Malicite this time This is a lot of text so I had to put it in spoiler tags.
    Interview

The beta info excites me. Looks like PC users will go up first. But 80 thousand people is a lot. I don't know how much they had for FFXI, but it looks like a lot of people who are eagerly waiting for this game wil get the chance to beta. I just hope more serious people will beta than people just wanting ti play the game and enjoy it.

Re: Interview with Tanaka and Komoto from TGS

FFXIV is more about the difference in the level between you and what you are fighting rather than the difference in levels amongst players.
    Squee!

The number of classes we’ll see at the start of service isn’t set yet. However, they do think they will add classes with version updates rather than with major expansions like they did with FFXI.
    Squee!

The goal is to design classes that are flexible. If a player wants to be an attacker, they can set more abilities suited to that. However, if their party needs a tank, they could set abilities for tanking instead and switch roles without switching classes. Some familiar abilities will also be making a comeback in FFXIV but people will need to be open minded about them. Komoto says Flee will most likely be included but that doesn’t mean the person using it is a Thief.
SQUEEEEEE! Ninja sounds like it could be more customizable and possible to avoid tanking!
The first round of beta testing will be done with a relatively small group and be conducted worldwide. It won’t be a continuously running beta test but broken down into small 3 or 4 hour tests held at different times.
They plan on doing very detailed testing on FFXIV so users will see how the game develops over time. At the beginning, tests will only be conducted with the Windows version. From the initial 3 or 4 hour tests they will expand to daily or weekly beta tests that run for 24 hours a day. After that comes stress tests which will require a lot of people.

Tanaka says it could start with 10 thousand people and go up from there to 20, 40, and 80 thousand people. Finally, there will be a free open beta. Originally he thought it would take half a year to go from a development build to the open beta, but he now thinks it will be shorter than that. The interviewer guesses at a summer release based on that and Tanaka says it all depends on the feedback they get from players during the beta testing. It doesn’t sound like the development build he is referring to is the same demo shown at gamescom. He says whether or not a development build is made by year’s end will depend on the developers.
MEW MEW MEEEW!!!!! xD This is getting better and better!

Interesting info, but I do hope they code for both DX10, and DX9, and not just DX9. Hmmm... I guess we will have to wait and see.

Re: Interview with Tanaka and Komoto from TGS

Curious if that "set abilities" bit is a proper translation, if so it sounds closer to what the FFT games had and that abilities learned from other classes might carry over to other jobs. Hopefully there will be exclusive skills for each class as well that can't carry over, I don't want to s things that could define a close passed around too liberally.

Nice to see Skillchains are going to be here as well, but that they'll be implemented in a new way. Hopefully a way where they don't fall out of use this time.

In regards Many Vs. Many fights, I'm hoping this time that crowd control skills are balanced out well enough to make this style of partying practical. FFXI gimped that potential from day one and still has yet to have true crowd control, particularly under one job. Its just been watered down and spread out to many jobs in FFXI.

I doubt the Enchanter class is what it sounds like for FFXIV, its probably related to a craft skill, but in Everquest, Enchanters were gods of crowd control. they could bind, charm and have enemies fighting each other while the party whittled down the ranks. It was pretty exciting to be in the center of all the madness, sorting it out.

                    Two pieces of bad news in this interview;

                    1) No Direct X 10. WTF SE? They claim they've done the research, yet they're still going to go with the older generation tech?

                    2) PS3 version won't be 1080p. COME ON! Why is MGS4 still like the only PS3 game to be done in 1080p?! God damn it all. Oh it'll still look nice & purdy, but I was really hoping to take full advantage of my nice shiny 48" Aquos LCD.

Well, at least it was mostly positive/awesome info, but those 2 points really got me down now I don't give a rat's ass if I can run it in 1080p on my PC, my monitor is only about 24" vs my kick ass HDTV & very comfortable leather couch!

mmm yeah DX10 would be cool, but atleast the latest DX9 is advanced enough to not suck like DX8. I do agree with the no 1080p for PS3 though, its odd, but it seems most companies don't want ot bother making their games with textures for 1080p *shrugs*

I thought it was gonna be 1080p also to be honest. But I am not mad about it or anything..

This does make me puke a little too e.e I was also looking forward to playing it on my ps3 and now it's just like... well, great It will still be very cool, just not as awesome as I was expecting on the graphics... Maybe their new crystal engine thing will make up for that... can only imagine.

I think people put way to much importance on 1080p its nice, but games look just as good in 720p but even myself on any new gen, I would not accept anything below 720i (Wii not included)
