Speaking of economists... the expense of NIN is a matter of supply and demand. Everyone and his brother's dog levels NIN at least to 37 and there's a ton of main NINs too. That drives the price of NIN gear and tools way up. Look at what happened to the price of ammo after a bunch of RNG quit or switched to other jobs: the fact that fewer people are playing RNG now makes it cheaper to play than it was when it was a trendy overpowered arrowburner. NIN is still in its trendy overpowered phase, so it's more popular than God and everything it uses is expensive.

That being said, I'm pretty sure shurikens were intended to be Awesome But Impractical and will stay that way. But as far as the basic gear and ninja tools, players are doing that to themselves/each other.

well it could have all been solved if they learned from Edge in FFIV or Shadow in FFVI, in NIN in FFV. They didn't need tools to use ninja magic (well okay Shadow and FFT ninjas didn't have ninjutsu, but technically ninjutsu is better off feeding on MP anyway.) also shurikens could have been NPC store bought at set prices that never rise.

I'm not one of those assholes that goes around talking about what jobs he wants to see down to what weapon they yield and what their evasion grade is. I was clearly speaking in a general sense: that the summon is linked much more heavily to the player's conduct and control; so that the player is effectively using the avatar as their character instead of their character. Whether that means directly controlling the avatar itself, while the player follows along behind it (somewhat like the Pokemon Trainer example that Armando gave), or having the player literally morph into the summon, or the player is absorbed by the summon and protected by it (think Yuna's Falafel form in X-2), or all of the Summons are actually mecha and the player is the pilot.

Well I am one of those assholes that goes around talking about specifics for potential jobs. But seeing as we both agree that the player should have some sort of direct control over the summon itself, it seems we agree on the basic concept. The only difference is I don't see someone who becomes the monster as a Summoner because that's a completely different job class.

Actually Shadow and FFT ninjas *did* work exactly like FFXI ninjas. You needed to buy their elemental balls to throw at enemies. Each ball had the effect of a weak elemental spell so it was effectively casting magic by throwing items. FFVII had items similar to this as well. Even Yuffie, the closest thing to a Ninja in FFVII comes with the Throw materia, effectively allowing you to throw weapons, like a ninja, to do damage. As far as I can remember, FF1 Ninja and Edge are the only two ninjas in FF history who didn't spend money to do damage.
