Brief derail. Was Samurai Legend Musashi any good?

I think thats the PS2 one right? As a rental, yes...to purchase, no. Though you could probably get it for the price of a rental now. Now Brave Fencer Musashi is a good game and one I'd recommend to people.

yea the orignal BFM was hard at first, but it's a funny story. and a better finale than most adventure games. I mean even the beginning was an instant classic. How often does the player get to have the hero throw a giant boss through MULTIPLE solid walls?

I didn't play the new Musashi game because I knew it wasn't going to be as good and they were just milking the name.

Well, the question was halfway rhetorical. The point was that either SMN or avatars being important to the plot has been done so many times already that it seems a bit silly to associate that specifically with FF6 in the hopes that there really will be Magitek/Mechabo.

What. What? Making a single sequel years later is milking the name? What name? BFM, like most other non-FF Square games, never really made a big name for itself.

They can still milk a game by delivering miniscule effort and uncreative quality that fails to match the original, and just have the name and its cult status drive home interest and sales. Many people even fear a Vagrant Story sequel because they find it hard they will have the right people and translators working on it like the first game.

And while Chrono Cross was great, many felt it didn't deliver what they wanted out of a Chrono Trigger sequel.

I can't comment on Samurai Legend Musashi because I haven't played it, but I don't give a damn how many people didn't like Chrono Cross, it was not milking the name. You can tell a lot of effort was put into the game - it shows, whether you like the game or not. It's not surprising that it wasn't what most people were expecting, but the game was made specifically with the mindset that they weren't making a Chrono Trigger 2.

"I didn't like it" =/= "They didn't put effort into it"

EDIT: And it's not like Brave Fencer Musashi was that tough an act to follow either. The plot was pretty shallow and the gameplay straightforward*. Making a worthy sequel or spiritual successor was well within the realm of possibility.

*That doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable or adequately difficult. The same two observations could be applied to just about any Mario game.
