      and

Gamescom 2009 FFXIV Roundup :: Final Fantasy XIV (FF14) at ZAM

So what everyone thought was THF or BRD is actually weaver. And god damn you Tanaka, again no male cats - _ - (for now anyway) wtf is so hard about adding in males anyway. God forbid some of us like cat people but don't want to play a girl.

        i like it that way

even if its men playing females its nice to see a balance of female / male characters in game, i believe most mithras would be male if they released a male version

And the thing is, supposedly the JP have been hounding Tanaka over this demanding male mithra in XI and now XIV. Purely from a business stand point, it makes less sense for them not to include males if so many people are asking for it. For all their talk of wanting the player to play the character they want, this is one giant hypocrisy. And this isn't vana'diel; there isn't some lack of males listed in the race's description (and yet there's apparently a severe lack of females for the Lalafell!) but still they stick to it.

I think we've known for a while that the class with the leopard print coat was a clothcrafter (weaver) since it's "weapon" is a needle.

As for the gender thing, I actually agree it's dumb to not make male mithra at this point in time. FFXIV is a fresh game with a new back story that's not limited like FFXIV's was. New races and "new" genders should be added to show it's not just a simple rehash of the old system.

And sur-names could be cool, but I can easily see that getting mis-used and leading to even worse xXxsupersayiajincloudirothxXx type names.

The way I view it is what possible harm is there in adding males as a selectable race for the Miqo'te? Will the very fabric of reality begin to unravel? Or does Tanaka have some warped fetish cat girls who are secretly men?

Female Galka on the other hand.... eww. Just eww. Fred Perry is the only artist I've seen to date to do a decent possible rendition, but that's in his cartoon style. A 3D model is another story entirely and well, I suppose SE could do it, but I'm just not seeing a large enough audience to make it worth the effort. I could be wrong, but that's what I think.

The way I see it (and probably SE) Mithra are the counterpart of Galka gameplay-wise. Even if they are not the same race.

But if you add Mithra males it makes sense adding Galka females too, regardless of how fugly they could potentially be... Although there's absolutely nothing that says Galka females have to look anything like the males of the species. It's fantasy after all, so they can make galka females the best looking of all races if so they wished (and much better looking than those fugly bunny girls, that's for sure.)

Either way, in my opinion while not opposed to both additions I find them to be redundant (due to my first statement.) So meh.

Totally agree. A lot of people on other boards are a little upset that they're getting the exact same races with different names. But I wouldn't put it passed SE to keep it hush hush till last minute though. But where did SE devs squash the rumor of Gria being in FFXIV? I am assuming it was in the article of Dengeki when they circled the horned girl.

                      Soo...

                      Cat Boy =-Yes
                      Female Rogadyn = No.

Taking your view into account, we already have hypocrisy. You're saying there's enough strange men out there that want to be catboys, but not tall, strong Rogadyn females. What sort of market testing did you do in regards to the Rogadyn female or did you just BS that out because the real reason is you have an ideal for how women should look and don't want it deviated from. So long as they're slender, pretty and have long hair they're OK, right?

I saw something like this on the Atlus forums in regards to Persona 3 Portable. Someone said they hoped the female main character - unlike the male - to only able to have one love interest. So the boy can be the cheat, but the girl has to be faithful?

Nah this isn't sexist at all. Guys can cheat, girls can cheat, both can be faithful and monagamous, too. Pick one. Just a game anyway. I have social links to max out, what Chie, Rise and Yukiko don't know won't hurt 'em.

I think its more to the ends of what Balfree said, Mithra and Miqo'te are something they put in the game to add some gender balance. Consider all the female Final Fantasy fans out there and put the catgirls out of the picture for a second. Without that option, most people would be default male for every race.

A bunch of squarish males in heavy armor killing monsters. This would make FFXI marketable to the same old audience and do little to sell women on it. But seeing so many female characters would probably make the game a bit more attractive to the female player, right? They might mostly still by guys anyway, but at least the in-game environment has a strong presence for both genders anyway.

I'm not saying the Mithra and Miqo'te are pure marketing ploys, but adding a male version of the race would just have another guy in hulking armor, just a strange one with a tail being the only difference.

Of course not, but there's not much of a variety to choose from. You'd think they want to differentiate a bit more with the races other than changing their names and looks. FF has so many possible races they can use, or they can just simply make up some new ones. That's what I am hoping they're doing.

Re: More XIV stuffs (interviews etc)

I'd definitely rather see female Roegadyn than male Mi'Qote. My reasons are simple:
                          1) I still think anyone this fixated on being a male catperson is weird. This is not gender bias - if there were no Mithra, I would be peeved at women bitching about how they neeeeeed to be catgirls to enjoy the game too.
                          2) Games always oversexualize women and seldom show buff women. Not even in fighting games. They still get drawn like supermodels that just happen to have extreme athletic and combat prowess. It's cool to have deformed people, giant hulking men, fat men, old men, but there's seldom any female versions. It doesn't even have to be some super colossal bodybuilder type, either; it just seems to me that there's an extreme aversion to showing even just light musculature in general. There are exceptions, but not many.
                          3) Mithra are stupidly popular, Galka are stupidly unpopular.

Mithra as a race always struck me as pure fanservice, not unlike the Viera. I mean, yeah, it's not like they just slapped some ass into the game and left it at that; they have their backstories and whatnot. But let's face it. They look too good, even in "armor."

eh true........ they could have at least added one "new" race to the mix

I still think there's gonna be new races. I am most likely wrong, but I am keeping my hope alive. I'll probly just be disappointed in the end.
