FFXIV will not have AH's! Could this lead to a fair economy?
Re: FFXIV will not have AH's! Could this lead to a fair economy?
It would be great if they made the weapons like in Diablo. They would have a life of like 100/100 and go down after your used it and if you got it fixed it would be like 90/90. Until, of course, it would eventually die.
Also, whats up with a burning panther as Pwnagraphic's avatar and not Burningpanther's?

I've never played Diablo, but whenever weapon decay is brought up, I think of much the same. A weapon starting out at 100%, gradually declining until it's damage and extra properties all reach zero: hitting for zero damage, zero stat boosts, zero bonus attacks(if the weapon had that to begin with). the weapon doesn't break/disappear, but it is effectively useless until you get it fixed.
And my forum title might be Burningpanther, but I changed the corresponding FFXI character's name a long time ago, and have since moved on past any avatars reflecting said name. Since I post sporadically, it will be a while before I have the gil to change the name.

Thats a funny coincidence I noticed when I created this name. But my old name here used to be Blackpanther so I used one of my Panther pics.

For examlple.. Prices would be based on the history of that said item. One could buy all of the stock up, sell it back to themself on a different character at an inflated price, and relist..
And then no one would buy it while everyone else flooded the market on these newly inflated items.
Items consistently selling for 200k on the AH then jumping to 1.1 mil within a week of the price of gil dropping from $38/million gil down to $13 springs to mind.
When's the last time this happened? X-mas 05? Yea, it's been fixed since then and SE is starting FFXIV with detailed knowledge on how to hammer RMTs.
Personally, I liked the idea of a centralized AH and player driven economy. Most of the truly expensive things on the AH in FFXI are things that are genuinely rare and hard to come by while being fairly useful. Things like that should be expensive. In the past 3-4 years the in-game economy has been fairly calm and controlled, rising and falling as a living market should. Players can discern an item's value far better then SE can, and we already have plenty of examples of that in game.
Take the Barone legs for starters, AH value of about 50k, an NPC resale price of about 7k, but the price to buy it from an NPC is over 4 million gil. See any problems there?
And while the whole "Buy from NPCs for the same amount you can sell it!" concept sounds nice and all, it's easily abused and with a system like that it won't be long until gil is worthless in the game. Especially if you make prices rise and fall due to increased stock. People will buy em up when they're cheap and sell em out when the stock lessens and the price rises again. It's pretty much the same situation we have now, except it'd be instantaneous while at the same time it would be introducing new gil into the game instead of recycling current gil.
The only real problem with FFXI's economy was the fact that armor lasted forever. People wouldn't buy low/mid level gear from the AH, they rented it, used it for a while and gave it back to the system. But FFXIV seems to be fixing that so that problem won't be as common place.

Let's get this thread back on topic before I have to dispense some street justice, shall we? (and no, this is not an idle threat)
/moderator hat off
We can speculate all we like, but it may be best at this point to just wait for more details - it's not like the game is years off, so we should be seeing a steady stream of information coming down the pipeline (which is more than one can say, for, oh, Final Fantasy 13...).

Threads like these(the sort that don't even have enough info for proper speculation) are inevitable, when the maker can't keep it in their pants about every single syllable of information released on their shiny new obsession.

Yeah tell that to the morons that heard SE say "we are thinking of other ways of payment, then what we have now in FFXI" and they translated that to "OMG FREE TO PLAY WOWZERS"
