You will be able to freely choose your starting point. It is not dependent on race. In FFXI, there was a slight bonus if you matched up your starting point with the race of your character. For example, you’d receive a ring if you were a Hume starting in Bastok. However, for FFXIV, he doesn’t think there will be anything like that. Everyone will start off equal so people can freely choose the character they want and where to start. The interviewer brings up having differences between the races and Tanaka tries to say this will not have a large effect on the skills or classes available to you. The difference will be there just to add a little color to each race.

Having equal races makes something like PvP easier too which is the next question the interviewer had. The base of FFXIV will be PvE. If they add PvP, it will probably be the sports competition-like style we see in FFXI. However, they are busy working on other things, so PvP will probably not be in the game at the start.
These make me happy, just the thought that they've considered some sort of PvP in the game is awesome to me.

              So um...

Does anyone else think the action queue will make curing really hard? "Oh shit the Tank's almost ded and I have 4 enfeebles lined up!" Escape escape escape es-*starts casting Paralyze*. Finally get your Cure lined up, and now your Action bar is empty. Finally fills up, and now people are dying.

Clarification: I'm not actually concerned at this point. I trust them to build a system intrinsic to... itself. Wow, that sentence didn't even make sense. Anyway, I'm just saying I'm interested to see how this ends up in play.

On XIII it is that way, but you can cancel queued actions...I think...

/em goes to play XIII's demo for a little bit.

I don't think they said anything about being able to queue multiple abilities. It only mentioned that if you selected an action and the gauge wasn't ready, it would execute as soon as possible.

Doesn't seem very practical to start queuing half the battle ahead of time when you're not 100% certain what's going to happen anyway. It'd kinda be like queuing up your next 5 moves in Chess right in the middle of a match. Sure, there's a chance your enemy will do what you think he'll do, but then there's the chance that everything will blow up in your face.

                    kk just finished replaying it.

Yep, you can cancel queued attacks but I usually only queue my first attack and the follow up (with a max of 3 per "turn")

Also, I think Versus and Agito will be more my style*, man those 2 trailers are awesome. I just re-watched them twice each.

Anyway, XIV's battle system is looking to be a mix of the free movement and macros from XI with the queue system from XIII so far. It takes some time to get used to it (since battles seem much faster without auto-attack) but other than that it should be pretty easy to use. And way better than XII's (although I'm very biased on that because I hated XII's battle system.)

*Plus I'm still iffy about the though of XIII probably been dumbed down for the brick's version's sake. But hopefully it's just that the demo is simply a demo. And certainly wouldn't prevent me from buying it anyway unless it was something drastic like the PS3 version having less native resolution than the brick's. <_<

If you can "que" ypur actions they will have a cancel button most likely. Just like you can cancel spell casting in FFXI. So, if you are trying to cure, but your hit the fire magic button instead before the bar is filled, you just hit the cure button before teh bar finishes filling up.

There was no cancel button. You had to move.. That'd be homo if you can't move and attack.

I know there's not, but you can stop casting the spell with /heal. Moving doesn't cancel it so much as it just causes it to fail at the end.
