I'll be crossing my fingers for a new race. I don't mind races from FFXI, but this is a new game.. I want something new as well.

Well, they have ingame screen shots, and the little battle was done with the games engine.

They might have a Semi-completed zone and character models. They are releasing the game in next year, so I dont doubt that they will have them

Yeah.. I wonder if they'll do the Live Cam like they did with FFXI.

I can't remember if it was the beta for Japan, or the launch for Japan... But we would all watch it with just some people running by. Then it would switch to people fighting a Behemoth type thing, and we would all flip out.

But it all is new, there are no Mithra, Galka, Elvaan, Hume, or Taru in FFFXIV, the races just looks slightly similar, and other aspects of the game will be so different from FFXI, the races wont even matter.

The only person you're trying to convince is yourself. New names and HD graphics don't make new races.

new back stories, new lore, new names, new looks...... they dont look like the same races to me. They look similar.... but not the same.

Hopefully, SE announces something mind blowing, but we will have to wait and see. Nothing about the races in FFXIV screams new, but then again that Galka type Roegadyn have no tail >.> haha...

well the thing I am getting at, is some people are "omg race copies" and in all technicality, they are not.

I agree with what SE said about them looking similar to the FFXI races.

people will get a better idea how different these new races are when their background and cultures and stuff are revealed.

and just because a tiger and a panther appear similiar, doesn't mean they are the same race.

Well to be perfectly honest I was merely looking at it from a aestetic perspective. They look VERY similar to the FFXI races and personally I don't pick my race based on backround story, certainly it can affect me if there are two races I like equally much, based on looks, but aside from that looks comes first every time. Backround story and the story I play through is just different and I will probably like them all so it doesn't really matter that much which race I pick from that standpoint.

You can say they are different races, and they are, but they look extremely similar and that is why I said I want a few "new" races, I meant completely new. I am sure there are going to be many differences in everything compared to FFXI, but if there are no other races than the ones that have been revealed I will be a little dissapointed(It doesn't matter THAT much, I am merely saying if I got to decide) because I'm sorry I want more new things in the race department as well, for me looks make a whole lot, and so far we don't have any new races compared to FFXI. Tbh I think SE feels the same way, based of some of the "interviews" I've read, and how hush hush they are when asked about other races and male "mithra" etc, and will add at least one more race, but who knows... we'll just have to wait and see.

And btw, a tiger and a panther are both cats, but they do look very different... FFXI races and FFXIV don't lol.. Sure they don't look exactly the same(galka without a tail), but generally it feels more like it is because they are using a new graphics engine than actual design differences.

EDIT: Btw, anyone else who wants to see a little more battles against the races we can play? Fighting mobs and beastmen is cool and all, but that is something I missed with FFXI, not a lot of beating up any baddywaddy tarus and whatnot.

EDIT2: Just saw on Zam.com that its confirmed SE will be at GamesCon in Germany and that there might actually be some type of playable demo. Can't wait.

I dunno, even some of the back stories look similar. Elezen sound like think they're better than everyone else, so they're probably going to be as arrogant as the Elvaan. Miqo’te are hunters, just like Mithra. Lalafel are said to be highly intelligent just like the Taru Taru.

Even I will admit... At the moment, FFXIV looks like FFXI thats be sprayed in Eorzea juice! You put a mentally handicapped person in a business suit, you gonna let him run your billion dollar industry? No, because the moment you give him his own office, he puts his pants on his head, his shoes on his feet, and walks around drooling while screaming "Gargly Goobily!"

The races look awesome. They are a very nice new version of the races we have all come to love... but new versions of a race isnt exactly "new".

Its like... watch me do something for 7 years and then let me change clothes and get a hair cut, and then continue doing the same thing... is it new?

This. New names, better graphics, slightly different details, but in the end, you are still looking at Humes, Elvaan, Mithra, Galka, and Tarutaru.

Don't be so quick to fall in love with the shiny new game that you ignore it's rehashed elements, be they for better or worse.



Though, in S-E's defense, it is an FF tradition to borrow elements from previous installments, so on the one hand, it could be argued that XIV's racial selection is just an extension of that tradition. On the other hand, it could be argued that they went from "borrow" to "carbon copy."

I will agree that A LOT of the stuff that they have revealed do look the same. But, there are also subtle differences as well.

All the races look the same, yet they have differences as well. They are being portrayed the same as they are in FFXI, but we need their back story for that.

The battle system has yet to be released. We need to know that if its an exact copy. The story line is different. Instead of the beastmen invasion, there was a war going on between the races, then the Impire comes into the picture, and they band together to fight the new threat.

The graphics are MUCH better than they are in FFXI, the land looks the same, sure, but sand looks the same, the grass looks the same, the sky looks the same no matter where you go.

...and the name of their city is even Tarutaru style. If another company had come up with all this, SE would rightly call the lawyers on them real quick.

"Eorzea juice"? Maybe more like "Eorzea koolaid" if you're not careful!
