I was a long-time player of FFXI. I played the game for two years and accomplished a lot. I've since moved on, although I still have very fond memories of FFXI. It was officially my first MMORPG, and the thing that made it stand out was how community-oriented the game was. I know it's changed a lot since my day, but back then to accomplish anything, you had to do it in groups, and I think that really made the game enjoyable. This interaction was the best part of the game.
I recently found out that FFXIV will be coming out next year. I'm really mixed on this, because on one hand, it brought back a flood of memories and nostalgia, and I'm thinking I may want to try it out. On the other hand, I know if I start it, I'm gonna be hooked. Eek.
I think what plagued FFXI was that were so many little problems here and there. Individually, these problems didn't hurt game too much, but on a macro-level, these problems were frustrating and inconvenient. Some examples of these are: 1) Constant searching for parties to gain experience, 2) Merging NAs with JPs (communication barriers), 3) Claiming HNMs and bots, 4) Gilsellers, 5) The amount of time to travel, or get things done...6) The difficulty of end-game (although I enjoyed the difficulty since I was a hardcore gamer but it really left you in a small minority because many people weren't as hardcore), 7) More job balance, 8) Better service (it seemed like the developers never cared for our opinions, and GMs really didn't do shit), etc.
At this point, I think Square-Enix has learned from their mistakes. I truly think FFXIV can be the game that FFXI was meant to be. So my question to all of you now is, what do you NOT want to see in FFXIV? What will make FFXIV better than FFXI?
Btw, I haven't posted here in years, so this is kinda like my welcome back post. Woohoo!
