Based on the information from the Connect! On thread, I'm expecting the traditional job system to be "abandoned" altogether. It seems to me that the weapon you wield will define the abilities available to you; sort of the inverse of FFXI, where your job determines your weapon. This seems to be supported by the fact that you can't really discern jobs from the logo (but it does display a full spectrum of weapons wielded in a circle, guarding each other's backs), along with the fact that they've mentioned that you'll need a balanced array of weapons in your group.

What I imagine is that the replacement for Job Levels and EXP, will be something along the lines of "weapon levels," and each weapon will have certain abilities attributed to it, some of which arguably come from the traditional FF jobs. From there, as you progress with that weapon, you'll give your character a certain focus by picking the abilities and traits you want; sort of like in FFXII's License Board system, except you'll never have enough points to cover the whole board. You might be able to "unlock" things like Cover by training sufficiently with a Shield, or Souleater by training sufficiently with a Scythe, and so on. By using the right weapon, you'll probably be able to emulate the roles and abilities of the traditional FF jobs at a basic level, while having a certain amount of freedom to customize your character.

I imagine your stats will also be tied to your current weapon. As you improve with the weapon, your overall stats will improve along with it, probably differently based on the weapon you're wielding. Kind of like FFXI, if you were to switch weapon types to something brand new, your stats would effectively be "Lv.1" until you get better with that weapon.

Yea Armando, that sounds plausible, but they've also mentioned that they want players to be able to experience multiple "jobs" on the same character like FFXI, wonder how that will work if what you suggested is similar to what might be on the way for us. They might keep the job system the same as FFXI and that will determine your overall growth pattern, and from there on out you will have options that define your play style but never will you make a choice that is final is what I'm hoping for, would suck to make some critical choice at some point and later regret it for some reason for not knowing what you'll need later on... and after having done quests and missions and what have you.

So yea regardless of what system they install... I expect to be able to experience all of it on one character, and that is what they are leaning towards the most right now.

Ah, I was just basing myself off that thread, I haven't done too much reading otherwise. Especially that bit about how FFXIV's take on jobs would be totally different from what we're used to in FFXI. But if my guess is right and the weapons loosely define a job, then you could "change jobs" with the same character simply by changing weapon types.

I would also expect them to allow you to re-do your skill decisions at a cost. RO does this, so does WoW. I doubt they'd implement a skill tree-type system and not give you the option to reroll in some way or another. Hell, even FFXI lets you undo merits, even though you don't get the points back.

Actually Armando if you read it again Elmer points out that the Job system is coming back, but will be different and bigger than XI's.

I'm more inclined to believe that your stats will grow based on the weapon type you use, with abilities coming from completing NPC quests (maybe in a certain manner?). For example, using a Dagger will lead to more DEX while a Great Axe would give STR.

It says right there in the article that they want it to be based on weapons and story participation, which is something I welcome with open arms; at last true appeal for doing quests! I just hope it's not too much like how WoW handles talents...

I did read it properly. I don't see anything that affirms that we're getting jobs in the traditional sense. It seems to hint the opposite.
For the Job System, Koumoto has expressed interest in taking aspects of FFXI's flexible style but expanding greatly upon it in new ways. In the end, it will be completely different from what we are familiar with in Vana'diel. The keyword here is "weapon," which we have heard was also the theme of the FFXIV logo. Somewhere in that wheel of adventurers lies a hint as to how jobs and leveling may change.
What I'm suggested could still be considered a job system to them with regards to answering that question. It's just extremely weapon-centric, to the point that weapons are what define jobs.

Obviously I'm not suggesting my speculation is necessarily what will be done, but I don't see how you're determining with certainty that we're getting a system akin to FFXI's jobs from the article. It can be interpreted differently.

I can't fathom a Red Mage using something like ... a Katana or 2H Axe, so I'm expecting jobs to still have weapon limitations...

              ... a Bard with a Spear?
              ... a Thief with a Staff?
              ... a Dragoon with a Katana?
... a Black Mage with an Axe?

I could go on... it just looks kinda "wut".

              Edit:

But it doesnt look stupid on recent games like FF12 and The Last Remnant... hmm

I believe what Armando is saying is that if you equiped an axe you would have warrior-like abilities and stats, versus if you equipped a staff you would have mage-like abilities and stats. And that your could also choose some additional abilities via a separate system.

That's the impression I got from the info as well.

That would be similar to past ability gaining systems of SE. It would be like having an item equipped for a certain period of time until the ability is learned off the item like in so many other FF games?

I was thinking more of a skill tree, like RO or WoW. I hated the "equip something for a certain amount of battles to learn its skill" system to death. Plus, the item-equip system doesn't exactly limit what you can or can't learn. Not much customization there.

Basically something along these lines: RO Knight skill tree. Or FFX's Sphere Grid/FFXII's License Board, with the exception that you won't be able to max out everything. Equipping a certain weapon would present you with a specific skill tree/sphere grid/license board/whatever with job-related passive traits and abilities, and as you level up with that weapon you would start choosing abilities and defining your own variation of the job.

You know, for being a generally shitty game iRO actually had a decent way of handling skills (it's more in line with how Diablo II worked)

^^ also, I never said we'd be getting FFXI's job system, my point was you sounded like you were saying there'd be no job system at all which is not what the dev's said. God, TGS feels like forever at this point (when is it anyway? isn't it usually in August? Or is that Spaceworld I'm thinking of...)

I'm starting to think that the game's advandcement will be sorta like Ryzom - Science-Fantasy MMORPG Emphasising Universe, Freedom, Roleplay and Community Ryzom.

From the Ryzome site, their growth system is a freedom type thing. You cant even eff up your character. You can for a little bit, but its only temparay if you did.

                        From the Ryzome Site:

Although you earn experience and gain levels, your advancement is measured on a skill tree. There are no classes in Ryzom, and you can advance in any tree as far as you'd like.

At the beginning, you only have access to the four most basic skills - Fight, Magic, Craft and Harvest. As you advance, these skills will begin to unlock new ones below them on the tree, each getting more specific than the one above. You finish and masterize a specific skill branch when you reach level 250.
                        • For example, fighting with a mace will first gain skill in the basic Fight tree, then the more specialised Melee Fight branch, and all the way down to Master Mace.
Each of these skills allows you to train in different Actions. The more specific the skill gets, the more powerful the Actions learned are.
It may take a long time to be able to completely learn an entire skill branch down to one of the most specific skill levels, but it's not necessary to do so to become capable. In some cases it might even be better to generalize and work on several branches.
This skill tree also makes it possible to give the benefit of flexibility to veteran characters, while still allowing newer ones to be effective. Because you never forget a skill once it has been learned, and because there is no penalty for learning multiple skills, the more skills learned, the more options that are available.

                        • Note: you don’t need to create a new character to explore another skill branch; you can do everything with the same one.

I want the experience I earn for another level to be reflected in the gain I receive at that level. No more fifty-million EXP for three or four extra stat points. I want to look like the Rock when I get that next level, and I should be the master of everything with all that experience.

From Wikipedia's entry on the TGS:

The 2009 show will be held from September 24 to September 27 following the same business and public days format as the last 2 years.

EDIT: It's actually earlier than it was last year... last year it was in October. That would have really sucked!
